TTamuWe had the best stay at Elswhwere Hotel West Gate. The building is restored it the nicest way really gives you the feeling of timetravel. The people working in the hotel, were carrying and welcoming. They explained us how to navigate the city, helped us buy tickets for the city sights, recommend restaurants and we even got a room upgrade and lovely gifts to take home and remember our time in Pingyao.
The bed was so comfortable and we had the best sleep. Can recommend this hotel full heartedly. Would definitely come back! Thank you Helen and Fenny for making our stay so memorable.

TTamuThis is without doubt the ideal place to stay in Pingyao Gucheng. It is located pretty much equidistant from the 4 gate towers - smack in the middle of the ancient town. It is right at the edge of the no-car zone (which is approximately the Southern half of the Gucheng), and this means that the hotel's car can drop you off right at the hotel's gate, and there is no need to roll your luggage down a street or transfer from car to electric cart. The Gucheng's main street is 5 minutes' walk away, easy access to all the restaurants, shops and main attractions. The hotel oozes old world charm, yet is up-to-date with modern amenities like heating in both room and bathroom, comfortable beds, key cards, etc. Hygiene and service were impeccable. The driver picked us up from and dropped us back at the high-speed train station on time, front desk staff checked on our needs all the time, helped with our bags (driver calling ahead before arriving), gave us daily fruit platters and water, etc. We had a fantastic time, and felt more taken care of than anywhere else on this month-long trip in China. Definitely recommend this hotel.

When you enter, you'll get a cup of tea, and the receptionists will explain a few things (where to eat, what to see, and so on). After you'll go to your room, which is traditionly built! The whole hotel is super beautiful!
Bed is comfy, I slept like a baby! You'll get a welcome snack, and I had a personal card written by the staff!
Also, the Chinese breakfast is jummie! For the Western people, they also provide another kind of breakfast in case they won't like the Chinese breakfast.
The location is good! Super close to the north gate, where you can grab a didi to go to the train station! In 10 minutes you'll be in the bustling area where you find restaurants, bars and shops!
And when I left, I got a goodbye present!! So kind

TTamuWe stayed at thos lovely hotel. Lovingly restored by the current owner Mr Wang. He is the 6th generation owner of the property.
Until 10 years ago it was a derelict and dilapidated building. He poured money, time, blood, sweat and tears to restore it
And it does feel and look like a traditional house.
You feel you are going back in time.
Firstly the customer service is way beyond the call of duty. Its so good, i would recommend staying with mr Wang at whatever hotel he runs.
He picked us at the Lower East Gate, and brought us to the hotel, then took nearly half an hour to explain in great detail where we need to visit, whether the sights be in the city or outside the city.
Some of his suggestions, not on the tour books were very good . For example he suggested 3 restaurants, and we avoided them thinking he was getting a kickback.on our 4th and last day we tried restaurant no 2 of his. And it was good , the food and service were good. The prices were average with other restaurants and we got a 10% discount being the hotel's guests. And remember we had eaten 10 meals by the time we came to his suggestions.
Another suggestion of Mr Wang was Ma family home - also a very good tip from him.
Everytime we had a request or question he always responded with enthusiasm.
On our last day we checked out at 4am and he still took us to the pick up point at that ungodly hour.
Yep Mr and Mrs Wang's customer service is just first class.
The room was large, queen deluxe double, and the furnishings were traditional chinese furniture made of Rosewood. Very Expensive furniture for a hotel room. Shower worked well and was hot. However be aware its chinese style wet floor system ie there is no shower curtain between the shower and a small part of the bathroom does get wet if youare not careful. MR Wang said it will be one his improvement on his priority list. Hopefully by the time you booked the problem will have been resolved
The hotel is very close to the main streets. About 5 min walk.
The city of pingyao is worth visiting, it is one of the very walled cities left in China, with its old buildings intact and people still living it. All the city walls are also intact. Magnificent at night.
