Red lantern Inn gives the best service among all the hotels I’d stayed so far in China. The owner and his wife picked me up from the Train station 20 min away. The location is superb, inside the old city and located just 5 min walk from the North Gate. The Mansion is so beautiful and well kept for hundreds years old building unless you like everything new or modern.
The best part is Xiao Lei, the sweet and polite inn keeper who’s extremely helpful although we had to use Google translator to communicate. He goes all out of his ways to do anything to make your stay comfortable and your visit enjoyable. He cannot explain how to but the ticket for the Old city, so he walks with me to the office. He also drives an electric truck to deliver my luggages to the north gate and call the taxi for me to the airport.
I’ll definitely come back to stay here if I come visit Pingyaogucheng again. I completely recommend this inn to everyone.

The customer service butler added WeChat the day before check-in, carefully asked us about our estimated arrival time and travel methods, and provided a lot of free consultation along the way😂😂 We encountered congestion on the highway and almost missed the scheduled performance in the evening. The lady was waiting on the roadside early in the morning, led us to the parking lot🅿️, and led us to the theater🎭~ It was a smooth ride~~ She also helped us book a popular restaurant for dinner, saving us the time of queuing! We stayed at the Elsewhere North Gate hotel for 1 night during our visit to China from Liverpool, England.
Easy to find and walk to from the North Gate entrance of Pingyao.
We were able to check in early, and our hosts were very helpful in making us feel welcome and provided advice and recommendations on where to eat and go during our stay. We did the castle walls, my tip is to take some water.
The room was modern and clean with plenty of space. Nice hot shower and plenty of free accessories too, which was helpful eg toothbrush and paste, snacks and coffee.
The location is about 2 minutes from the main street in Pingyao too.

The hotel is perfectly located at the heart of the old city. If, like me, your Chinese reading capabilities are not good, it might be difficult to identify, as none of the pictures here are from the front facade, but the location is correct and the sign has the correct name in Chinese. Rooms are good and clean (ours smelled a little bit of tobacco, but was otherwise fine). Breakfast is varied and includes several options, from noodles to pickled veggies, buns and steamed eggs. We didn't have much interaction with the staff, as we didn't need anything in particular, but they seemed nice and at least one had basic English skills. The courtyard is beautiful and has several adorable feline inhabitants that will make your stay better.

We are truly impressed by the Jinxuan Hotel and had a wonderful time here. Communication was smooth, the local breakfast was delicious – and best of all, the traditional Chinese architecture made our stay in Pingyao feel like a journey back in time.
All major attractions are just a few minutes’ walk away, which made everything even more enjoyable. We were also picked up from the train station and brought back, which was incredibly convenient and thoughtful.
An unforgettable experience – we highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Pingyao.
We’re genuinely sad to leave.

GGuest UserThis is the first time I take the initiative to write a review for a business, just because this stay is beyond imagination perfect! After checking in, I was pleasantly surprised! (Towels and bath towels are disposable, very hygienic)
The room is in a wabi-sabi style with wooden details, and is fully equipped with all the daily necessities of extraordinary quality, making it feel like home. It is equipped with a Lifen negative ion hair dryer, Jomoo smart bathroom, and two pillows per person. One of the pillows is the same deep memory pillow as the one in Atour Hotel, which is super comfortable.
The B&B is in an excellent location, right on the main street of the ancient city, with convenient transportation and dining.
What warmed my heart the most was the service. As soon as I got off the car, the staff enthusiastically helped me with my luggage, asked about my well-being, and the temperature in the room was just right. The boss gave me a sightseeing map and some useful travel suggestions, which helped me avoid unnecessary expenses. He even directly refunded the discount on the tickets for the Encore Pingyao show I booked for me.
Such sincere and enthusiastic merchants provide all-round care and protection, which makes people feel warm inside. This dedication deserves to be seen and appreciated!

GGuest UserWe stayed at thos lovely hotel. Lovingly restored by the current owner Mr Wang. He is the 6th generation owner of the property.
Until 10 years ago it was a derelict and dilapidated building. He poured money, time, blood, sweat and tears to restore it
And it does feel and look like a traditional house.
You feel you are going back in time.
Firstly the customer service is way beyond the call of duty. Its so good, i would recommend staying with mr Wang at whatever hotel he runs.
He picked us at the Lower East Gate, and brought us to the hotel, then took nearly half an hour to explain in great detail where we need to visit, whether the sights be in the city or outside the city.
Some of his suggestions, not on the tour books were very good . For example he suggested 3 restaurants, and we avoided them thinking he was getting a kickback.on our 4th and last day we tried restaurant no 2 of his. And it was good , the food and service were good. The prices were average with other restaurants and we got a 10% discount being the hotel's guests. And remember we had eaten 10 meals by the time we came to his suggestions.
Another suggestion of Mr Wang was Ma family home - also a very good tip from him.
Everytime we had a request or question he always responded with enthusiasm.
On our last day we checked out at 4am and he still took us to the pick up point at that ungodly hour.
Yep Mr and Mrs Wang's customer service is just first class.
The room was large, queen deluxe double, and the furnishings were traditional chinese furniture made of Rosewood. Very Expensive furniture for a hotel room. Shower worked well and was hot. However be aware its chinese style wet floor system ie there is no shower curtain between the shower and a small part of the bathroom does get wet if youare not careful. MR Wang said it will be one his improvement on his priority list. Hopefully by the time you booked the problem will have been resolved

The city of pingyao is worth visiting, it is one of the very walled cities left in China, with its old buildings intact and people still living it. All the city walls are also intact. Magnificent at night.

GGuest UserMy stay in this guesthouse was amazing. The service was responsive, polite and helpful, English-speaking and very flexible. The rooms are great and clean, and the main lobby is beautiful. The direction may be hard to find at first for travelers, but quickly you learn the location and there’s an advertisement showing its presence in the street. I hope to come back someday, the experience was excellent and Pingyao is a very interesting town.

Alan was attentive to our stay at all times.
Even before we arrived at the hotel, he contacted us to arrange transportation to pick us up at the entrance to Pingyao Ancient City.
The hotel is beautiful, and the rooms are carefully designed. The hotel's location is about a 10-minute walk from the main street, which is great because it's quiet. The bed is very comfortable, and the bathroom has a Japanese-style toilet, which is very convenient. It has all kinds of amenities.
The breakfast is very complete and delicious.
The entire hotel staff is very friendly and helpful.
On our last day, as our train was leaving in the afternoon, we left our backpacks at the hotel while we strolled around the city. Instead of picking them up ourselves, Alan arranged for a shuttle to take them to a nearby location (so we didn't have to travel to get them ourselves). He also arranged for a shuttle to take us and our backpacks to one of the city exits, and from there we could take a taxi to the train station. For us, these kinds of details make the experience not only at the hotel, but also in the city, magnificent.
Alan goes above and beyond to help his guests. Thank you so much, Alan! I highly recommend this hotel because it makes everything so easy.

MMandyI have to say this is the best accomodation in my entire Shanxi trip in which i stayed in 5 facilities. I truly appreciate the service provided, i got what i needed in a timely manner. As a solo traveller in a foreign country (i can speak simple mandarin, but cannot read chinese), i was glad that the proprieter could pick me up from Pingyaoguzhen station. Although i initiated the request, from then on, about 5 minutes before the train arrived Pingyao, he was proactive to send me a voice message on wechat when he arrived at the station and shared a photo to identify himself. The journey was 15 minutes in the car, followed by a tuk tuk as cars are not allowed to enter the ancient city during the day. The point of entry to the facility is via the north gate, it is a 3 minutes walk to Ma family mansion and about 10 minutes walk to the centre of the ancient city where most of the good restaurants are located. I booked a traditional chinese design room on the ground floor with the dragon-phoenix bed and another day bed. I did not ask, but i guess the facility is an old house that was built more than 100 years ago, there is a sign at the external wall of the homestay that indicate it is a protected building. As it was an old house, i was surprised that the room was clean, just the bathroom was slightly deteriorated (there is no separation of wet vs dry). The blanket in traditional dragon & phoenix design and traditional pillows with seed-like fillings were clean and odourless, i was so glad. Although the mattress was quite thin, it was not hard, i was glad. The proprieter gave me a map and explained the layout of the old city how to get around, where to eat, and help arranged shared car to Qiao family mansion. Upon checking out, i was given a bottle of locally brewed vinegar. The proprieter was not around when i left, he sent me voice message to arrange transport for my trip to the train station. I actually felt sorry when i told him that i booked another place in the more happening area of the ancient city (south gate) after checking out from his place. There are many buggy cars operating in the ancient city, charging ¥10/trip, you can tell the driver your desired destination and he/she will drop you at the door step or the closest drop off point if that area is not accesible.

SSimpleTravelerGreat place in Pingyao. It is reasonably priced, a bit out of the very center (meaning also out of tourists crowds that can be quite noisy in the evenings and mornings), but still close, has same old-style design as the more popular and well-established places that cater to foreigners, but priced twice as much. Pick-up and drop off service is provided - just contact the hotel in advance via phone using the reception of tour previous hotel - no one speaks English - it will solve your communication issue if you do not speak Chinese. At the place itself everyone is very eager to help - use your phone app to translate. Onwer helped me to buy tickets to Pingyao attractions and Terracota Army as I was heading to Xian next (available only through WeChat Pay that is in turn is not availablefor foreign tourists as of April 2023). If you go to Shuanglin temple, be sure to ask to buy tickets through WeChat for you as well. I was able to buy physical one by pure compassion of local guard who asked the staff to open ticket office just for me (Probably was the only foreigner in Pingyao at a time). Please also note that as of April 2023, the reconstruction works in the historical city parts are continuing, so, large chunks of the city within the walls are not looking as great as it could have been. The very center of the city is mostly untouched though and you can still come and explore. If going in spring, be prepared for the temperature swings. I got a temperature drop from 28C to 3C within 2 days by the moment I got to Pingyao. It was even snowing at night.

RRinMMReally love the hotel’s a**osphere. It is cool both scenery and weather. There aren’t much noice and people around the hotel, a little walk and you will reach some of the tourist’s attraction. Some employees can speak english or if not, wechat is the best help. They also booked taxi and drop us off by the taxi, the service was wonderful. Will stay here again if there’s a chance of visiting.

GGuest UserI traveled with my husband. I was originally going to Taiyuan, but later I suddenly had the idea of visiting Pingyao Ancient City. It was really worth the trip. The high-speed rail arrived at just 12 o'clock. The normal check-in time is 2 o'clock. I called the hotel to see if there were any rooms available for check-in. The front desk informed us that there were rooms and they could pick us up. After informing us of the location, we were picked up very quickly. Every service staff member had a very good attitude. The front desk sister also gave us a travel map to tell us where to have fun, which saved a lot of time. During the day, my husband and I went to take photos of the Pingyao check-in goddess. At night, we watched the light show and came back late. I didn't expect that there was still a light waiting for us. The aunt asked us kindly if we were back. Every scene in the hotel is especially suitable for taking pictures. There are also free Hanfu to wear. It's great. I slept very well at night. The sister also upgraded our room. The room design is very unique and quiet. There are also small gifts for us. The oranges sent are also very sweet. When I woke up at night, it was breakfast time. The breakfast variety is not much, but there is a very strong feeling in it. You can eat enough. In the end, I didn't eat the beef patties given by the aunt. The uncles and aunts are very polite and enthusiastic. They said that we often eat takeout and want to eat something healthy There are still many places that I haven't praised on this trip, but the experience is already great. The bed is also very comfortable. If you come to Pingyao for a trip, you can come and experience it! By the way, it's in the ancient city, and it's very convenient to go anywhere.

GGuest UserPingyao Garden Inn, which I found on Qunar.com, has a high praise rate. I chose it as my temporary residence during my trip to Pingyao Ancient City. The homestay is located in the center of the ancient city, which is very convenient to various attractions in the ancient city. The inn is clean and tidy, and the environment is elegant and quiet. The owner and his family are very hospitable and took the initiative to introduce us to the surrounding environment, the best routes to visit the ancient city attractions, and the characteristics of the main attractions. Every morning, they prepared a delicious breakfast for us on time, helped us solve various needs, and contacted the vehicle to the high-speed rail station for us when we left. Two days made us feel comfortable and warm just like at home. I would like to thank Mr. Gong and his family at Pingyao Garden Inn. I look forward to visiting Pingyao Ancient City again next time.

JJeffery.truongThe ancient city Pingyao and the Yundingxuan hotel blowed our mind. The hotel provide free pickup from the train station. We took the high speed train arrived at Pingyaocheng station which is around 15 minutes away from the ancient city. When you enter the city wall gate, you will be amazed of the narrow streets and cobblestone road. Picked Yundingxuan hotel because it was closed to the North gate so
If the taxi was to dropped us off it’ll be a short walk but the driver dropped us off near the hotel because cars are not allowed within the main streets.
The hotel is closed to 200 years old and have characteristics of the Ming and Qing dynasties. I was born in Vietnam,
With roots to China but raised up in the US since I was 7 years old. I’ve seen Chinese movies but nothing will prepare you to the hotel and the ancient city. I was surprised how big the hotel complex was. All the staff were very nice, the main host spoke English, and the breakfasts were traditional Chinese breakfast. We stayed two nights and we felt safe throughout our visit. My wife and daughter appreciated the three hotel cats and all the felines throughout the city.
I’m sure the other hotels are fantastic and will give your a unique experience but I can vouch for Yundingxuan. Just be prepared to get out your comfort zone but be amazed by the visual and taste of Pingyao Ancient City.
