If you paid nearly $300 for a night in a cabin, would you expect mice, mouse droppings, and crickets inside and condescending customer service? Absolutely not. But that's what you can expect at Lochsa Lodge. My husband and I were mortified by our entire experience, from the way it was rudely handled by the management to the unclean state of the accommodations. We typically camp at the campsite below the lodge, but this year we "splurged" since we are newly married. I grew up in Idaho and am no stranger to wildlife, but we splurged so we could have a more memorable experience than camping. When we entered our cabin, a mouse scampered across the floor and ran into my husband's foot, not to mention the mouse feces, jankety A/C system, giant crickets, and mouse traps visible in the cabin (clearly they know the infestation is an issue). I immediately - and very kindly - reported the state of the cabin to management and asked for alternative accommodations or a refund. The manager looked at me down her nose, scoffing at my complaint. "We are in the middle of a national forest, you know. There's nothing we can do for you." By that point, we knew we wouldn't be able to sleep with skittering mice afoot, so we were forced to drive on dark roads an hour to a hotel in Missoula. We talked on the drive about how we just returned from the Amazon Jungle, one of the most bio-diverse regions in the world - no rodents or bugs in our lodging there! This is about health, care and human standards.
