This is the Sangju Insect Ecology Exhibition Hall in Gyeongsangbuk-do. Changes in the environment, such as the disintegration and formation of the supercontinent, rapid increases in oxygen concentration, and climate change, directly affect the activities and evolution of living things. A large amount of nutrients flowed into the ocean, and the active photosynthetic activity of plants led to the change to the world of multicellular metazoans during the Second Oxygen Revolution. After the appearance of Ediacaran fossils 570 million years ago, trace fossils were discovered 555 million years ago, and about 520 million years ago, life became extremely diverse. Cyanobacteria created oxygen through photosynthesis, thereby changing the Earth into an environment where life could live. Oxygen filled the Earth, and some of it rose to the top of the Earth's atmosphere to form the ozone layer. Since the ozone layer blocks ultraviolet rays from the sun, creatures living in the ocean were able to come up to land and live. Complete metamorphosis Metamorphosis is the process in which insects grow, from larvae to adults. Insects that undergo complete metamorphosis go through a pupa stage and become adult insects. Examples include butterflies, flies, and mosquitoes. Incomplete metamorphosis Incomplete metamorphosis is when larvae become adult insects without going through a pupa stage. Insects that undergo incomplete metamorphosis include dragonflies, cicadas, mayflies, and grasshoppers. Edible insect industry Among the various insect industries, the edible insect industry is the most notable. In Korea, grasshoppers, silkworm pupae, white-spotted crickets, brown mealybugs, double-headed crickets, white-spotted flower chafers, and longicorn beetles have been officially registered as edible insect food ingredients by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. In order to reduce the biggest problems with edible insects, such as aversion and disgust, we are making various efforts, such as holding insect cooking contests.
