This is the Sangju Agricultural Culture Center in Gyeongsangbuk-do.

This is the Sangju Agricultural Culture Center in Gyeongsangbuk-do. Sangju is a large city in Gyeongsang-do. There are many mountains connecting Baekdudaegan to the northwest, and fertile plains with the Nakdong River flowing to the east. The entire area is surrounded by mountains, forming a basin with a large daily temperature range and no major disasters. It has great natural conditions for the development of agriculture due to the large rivers along it, and has been known as the best granary in Yeongnam since ancient times. The Nakdong River originated from the old name of Sangju, Nakyang. It was called the Nakdong River because it formed a large river to the east of Nakyang. The large river provides a good environment for people to live together, such as water for daily use, and is also the foundation of all industries, including agricultural water. The Nakdong River makes Sangju's fields fertile, and the people of Sangju draw water from the Nakdong River to farm. The main rivers in Sangju that flow into the Nakdong River are Byeongseongcheon, Iancheon, and Jangcheon. These rivers originate in the south and west of the city and flow east, merging with the Nakdong River. Gonggeomji allows us to glimpse the wisdom of the Sangju people who efficiently utilized civil engineering technology by minimizing artificial pond dams and maximizing the size of freshwater. In the Gyeongsangdo Sokchan Jiriji, it is recorded that the area of Gonggwonje (Gonggeomji) was 268 gyeol 40 bu (2,550,000 ml), and other reservoirs at the time were recorded to have supplied water to an average of 26 gyeol of rice paddies, so the size is comparable. People perform rites at every stage from birth to death. Koreans considered the rites of passage, wedding, funeral, ancestral rite, and rite as important rites throughout their lives. In addition, birth rites (baekil, dol) to pray for the health and longevity of babies, and the hwaggaprye, a feast to celebrate 60 years of longevity, were also important life rites. The custom gradually disappeared after the hair-cutting order, the meaning of the 60th birthday ceremony faded as we entered an aging society, and the ancestral rites were simplified for religious reasons or as society changed to a nuclear family. Nevertheless, weddings and funerals are still important rites. Through artifacts related to various rites performed in community units, we can read the thoughts and lives of the Sangju people. During the Joseon Dynasty, the roles and status of men and women were strictly divided due to the influence of the national governing ideology, Neo-Confucianism. Therefore, even within a household, the living spaces of men and women were separated, and a sarangbang (a room for men) was prepared separately from the main room. In particular, for scholars, the sarangbang had a special meaning beyond a living space. Scholars constantly cultivated their studies based on the ideology and morality of Confucianism, and at the same time, they considered poetry, calligraphy, and painting as essential knowledge and did not neglect them. Therefore, the sarangbang of the Joseon Dynasty became a study room where they cultivated their studies and a space for artistic activities. The sarangbang was a space that showed the owner’s taste and status. Scholars considered the splendor of wealth and honor vulgar, and decorated the Sarangbang with a simple yet neat style. The agriculture of Sangju during the Joseon Dynasty is the root of its reputation as the home of Sambaek today. Sambaek originally meant rice, cotton, and silkworm cocoons, but today dried persimmons are used instead of cotton. Sangju has maintained a tradition of rice farming since the Three Kingdoms Period, and it was a good land for growing cotton. Mulberry trees are widely known as a local specialty. In Sangju, the sericulture industry developed greatly during the late Joseon Dynasty and the Japanese colonial period. Since then, it has gained a reputation as the home of silk, representing Korea. Mulberry trees are recorded as a specialty in the 『Sejong Sillok Jiriji』, and the mulberry trees in Dugok-ri, Sangju, designated as Gyeongsangbuk-do Monument No. 1, speak of the long tradition of sericulture. The sericulture industry, which involves planting mulberry trees to raise silkworms and spinning silk to make clothes, is as old and important an industry as agriculture. The first record of Sangju dried persimmons appears in (Yejongsillok). In the “Sinjeung Dongguk Yeoji Seungram,” persimmons are recorded as a specialty of Sangju. The raw material for dried persimmons is the bitter persimmon called “Sangju Dongsi.” The land where persimmons grow well, combined with the climate with a large daily temperature range, produces dried persimmons that are delicious enough to be presented to the king. Dried persimmons are a subject of oral literature widely passed down across the country and are also the history of agricultural technology and agricultural processing in our country. Every year from October to December, many people gather at dried persimmon drying yard to make dried persimmons together, continuing the community culture. Our people have made a living with rice as their staple food. Rice farming, which can be said to be the foundation of rice production, requires both technical skills and a lot of labor. Reservoirs that store and manage water were the most important facilities in rice farming. #Domestic travel #Travel plans #February travel subsidy event
