Wat Luang Khun Win: A Hidden Gem in the Forest

Wat Luang Khun Win is an ancient temple that was abandoned for 700 years before being restored in 1954. Getting there: You can set your GPS to Wat Luang Khun Win. The temple is located on a hill with steep and partially dirt roads. The distance is approximately 10 km, and pickup trucks can make the journey. If you're unsure, there are local transport services available opposite Wat Sop Win. These are songthaew (shared taxis) with a fare of 800 baht, accommodating up to 8 people, and the trip takes about 45 minutes. At the base, you’ll find vendors selling flowers, incense, candles, fruits, and water for offerings. (Tip: Many people bring water as offerings, so the temple likely has plenty.) If visiting during the dry season, it’s advisable to bring a dust mask. Upon arrival, the driver will let you explore at your leisure. The temple features buildings and Buddha statues, most of which are made of wood and intricately carved. A highlight is the reclining Buddha carved entirely from wood, including its backdrop, which is stunningly detailed. At the front of the temple, there’s a white Naga staircase with curved steps resembling the scales of a mythical serpent—a must-see spot for photos. The temple grounds are peaceful, clean, and surrounded by lush forest. There are well-maintained restrooms, but no shops. Though the journey may be challenging, the destination is undoubtedly worth it.
