My son and I decided to make an overnight trip to Monument Valley in order to make both sunset and sunrise images for our memories. We arrived at around 4 in the afternoon which gave us a chance to drive the 17 mile loop and capture some amazing images at sunset. When we arrived at the cabin we discovered a leaky toilet and called the front desk. Within minutes there was a maintenance person at our door. We explained the issue to the employee and noted we wanted to take the loop drive before it closed at 5 PM. This gentleman was a local so he had good advice on the do's and don'ts when taking the loop drive without a guide. We also asked him if we could find some disposable bowls and silverware for the salads we brought ourselves. He informed usike that they were available up by the gift shop, then we were on our way to the amazing loop drive. The loop drive was very easy to follow, but was restricted to 15 MPH to keep the dust level low for all the open air vehicles with guides. The advantage here was that we were stopping frequently to make images of the amazing rock formations anyway, so we were not in a hurry. The total loop drive took about 2 hours with stops and pictures. At one of the stops there was a local Navajo gentlement who was just packing up his jewelery table from his sales for the day. His name was Daniel and my son and I had a very nice converdation with him about what it was like growing up on the reservation. It was such a nice treat talking with him. We missed the opportunity to get some additional shots of the monuments at sunset, but the conversation with Daniel was worth it. Once we returned to our cabin we found the toilet was fixed, and the maintenance gentleman had left some paper bowls and plastic silverware for us. We were very surprised. We actually took some great sunset shots from our cabin which turned out very nice. After dinner when it was totally dark outside we decided to shoot some night images using our tripods. Many of them turned out better than I would have thought since I don't practice night photography very often. Later in the evening when we were relaxing in the cabin, the winds really began to pickup to the point that the whole cabin was rocking and shaking. It was quite the experience, almost like being on a cruise ship. Haha. The next morning was beautiful for shooting the sunrise. We were right outside our cabin and were able to make dozens of images of the west and east Mittons which are iconic to Monument valley. Overall, it was a majical experience I would recommend to those photography enthusiasts. The cabins were clean and comfortable, and the staff were very friendly and welcoming.
