Just the location alone makes Castle Rock the best place to stay in Scotland. On top of that, the staff are super kind and friendly. I was surprised how many people the place accommodates because I initially thought the building was 2 floors, not 4, but with huge, spacious rooms, multiple lounges, and a 2-room kitchen with tons of fridges and stoves/ovens, the hostel doesn't feel crowded at all. In fact, the a**osphere is very welcoming with both the staff and guests/roommates. Maybe I just got lucky with the others in my 12-bed room, but I found that everyone was super kind and chatty, and the social spaces in the kitchen and lounge were a great place to connect with others. If you're staying on a Thursday, don't miss the mega pub crawl! It's a very organized event which will take you to the best bars in town with drink deals and a low-key and optional team challenge at each stop. I met people from all over the world and had great conversations with the other attendees. There are events every night, but this was the only one I personally joined. I was also surprised by how well-cared for the building and its facilities are despite it being such an old building. The showers and toilets were always very clean, as well as the kitchen. If you're around between 10am and the evening, you will encounter staff all throughout the hostel cleaning, vacuuming, and tidying up. If anything, Castle Rock is overstaffed with employees everywhere thoroughly cleaning. If you're considering staying in Edinburgh, let Castle Rock be the reason you decide to visit, you won't regret it!
