Saint Pauls House

Our favourite Boutique hotel in a great location. The bar and restaurant is very attractive. Though we didn’t dine here this time the food is very good value too.

The hotel is on St Paul’s Square. Parking around the square is free on Sundays. The entrance is worthy of a selfie and a post on Instagram. Reception is in the left corner of the lobby as you enter and the desk staff are very helpful and informative. Rooms are small but very clean. The minibar was “free”. Lifts out of order.

Second time staying as a couple at this hotel. Great location for the bars and restaurants of the Jewellery Quarter area and nearby. I want to like this hotel more but this particular stay had a few *******. For a three storey hotel with only one lift, I’d expect it to be “in service” all the time but it wasn’t. Check-in was only functional with no warmth and it had that “I’m just going to stare at my screen and not really engage with you” kind of style. I’ve had better check-ins at Premier Inn. We had a specific issue with the power in our room which, while no-one’s fault, wasn’t dealt with quickly enough (something, not anything of ours, was tripping the room sockets). Eventually, just before check-out, we were offered complimentary breakfast but you were kind of left thinking that the hotel didn’t see this as the same issue we did (no telly, hairdryer, kettle or coffee machine could be used during our stay). First world problems maybe, but for a hotel charging £140+ room only, I don’t think it’s unrealistic to expect a bit more empathy and speed of action. On the plus side, breakfast is good - made to order too, which is fast becoming a rare thing. And the bar is beautiful and prices aren’t daft.

The place is really nice and friendly. The rooms are simple but well kept. The pillows are not very comfortable they are made of a material that feels like plastic. I found the price on the high side but Birmingham is an expensive place. Still I will go back.

I rarely review places but having parted with £175 ex breakfast it is important to point out why I would stay elsewhere next time. Firstly great building and the people on reception and front of house in the bar/restaurant were excellent. No issues there. In a world where the consumer spend is tight and there are plenty of places eager for our cash it is more important than ever that the customer experience is good. Despite the efforts of front of house this place failed the test. 1. It is very much not ok for kitchen staff to conduct a feedback session with a colleague at the bar and in earshot of customers. It is then wholly inappropriate to be told by this back of house staff member to keep out of when pointing out this simple courtesy. Customers do t expect to be part of internal disagreements. There is some coaching and training to be done here. Other issues. Room 112 was very cold. No working heating. Not good enough for £175. Thank you to reception for supplying a portable heater. In room coffee supply out of stock. Thank you again to reception for sorting an alternative. Bathroom sealant needs replacing and sink plug hole full of nasty stuff. Sheets thin and duvet cheap. Room a bit “tired”. Expect more for money. Need to refresh, up game and coach the kitchen staff member on what is ok and what is for behind the scenes. Shame really. If the stay was £90 then it is ok.. but it wasn’t.

Nice large bar/lounge area but hotel rooms and area is a little tired. Only one coat hanger and quite a lot of noise from neighbouring rooms.

On a pretty square in a lovely building. Room was nice, but need to sort the mould in the bathroom, and the pillows were a bit lumpy. That said would likely stay again. Service was very friendly.

The hotel looks lovely and the staff were very friendly and helpful. What lets it down (apart from the pillows, which are awful!) is the noise from the bar. This made it impossible to get an early night's sleep. At least it did quieten down after midnight. The breakfast was very tasty, which went some way to making up for a poor night's sleep.

Staff were rude when arriving. Were not understanding and were disrespectful very disappointed
