Tianmen Mountain was known as Songliang Mountain during the Eastern Han Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms period, a hole opened in the mountain wall, and Sun Xiu, the king of Wu, considered it a sign of good luck and renamed it Tianmen Mountain. He also dismantled Wuling County and established Tianmen County. Tianmen Mountain is a masterpiece of nature. In its long geological history, it has experienced marine sedimentation and has risen to form a mountain, which has been eroded by wind and rain for billions of years, especially during the Yanshan Movement in the Triassic period. At the end of the Cretaceous period, a large-scale Himalayan orogeny further lifted Tianmen Mountain, which was cut into a solitary mountain by two fault canyons, creating a huge height difference between the mountain and the valley. The height difference within a few kilometers is more than 1,300 meters, which makes Tianmen Mountain stand tall and majestic. Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park is mainly for sightseeing and tourism, and it deeply explores cultural connotations. It fully embodies the "magical", "mysterious", and "sacred" atmosphere and main tone of the first sacred mountain in western Hunan. It is divided into four major scenic spots: Tianmen Cave, Tianjie Buddhist Country, Biye Yao Terrace, and Seeking Immortal Wonderland. It includes "Tianmen Cave", "Tianjie Buddhist Country", "Floating Ladder", "Love of Wood and Stone", "Lingxiao Changyuan", "Rainbow Rope Dragon Flying", "Xuanbi Hidden Immortal", "Curved Road to Heaven", "Cloud Dream Climbing the Summit", "Dan Stove Flying Smoke" and other ten landscapes and Tianmen Mountain Cableway, Tongtian Avenue, Tianmen Cave, Shangtian Ladder, Tianmen Mountain Temple, Ghost Valley Cave, Baihe, Tianmen Academy, Li Na's Cabin, Lingquan Courtyard, Yunmeng Xianfeng and other 5 cultural and natural attractions. Tianmen Cave is 131.5 meters high, 57 meters wide, and 60 meters deep. It is open from north to south all year round. It has always had the three wonders of "Tianmen Fog", "Tianmen Aura" and "Plum Blossom Rain". In 1999, the world stunt flying master drove through Tianmen Cave, causing a sensation worldwide. Tianmen Cave has attracted worldwide attention ever since. The 2006 Russian Air Force Zhangjiajie Tianmen Mountain Stunt Flight Show upgraded the suspense of Tianmen Cave and once again became a global focus. Tianmen Cave is a sacred place for local people to pray and make wishes, and the folk custom of "climbing to heaven to pray for blessings" is still followed to this day.
