I was invited by a friend who knows the area well to go on a short hour trek. It's not that hard if you take breaks, but it's dangerous to climb alone. The sunset from the top is exceptional. Allow 2 hours for the climb. If it gets too dark on the way down, it's dangerous because you can't see your feet. Long pants and sneakers are essential for trekking in Sedona, and if you lose your balance and fall, you'll get hurt by the thorny plants and cacti that grow in the area. The soil isn't slippery, but you'll be walking on rocks as you climb, so ankle-high trekking shoes are stable. I was wearing Nike sneakers, but the cactus spines are as long as sewing needles and can easily tear fabric if caught on something. Locals are fine in sandals, but first-time climbers should be careful about what they wear. And it can be dangerous when strong winds blow, so don't push yourself when the weather is bad.
