Dihua Street was initially established in the 1850s. Since the end of the 19th century, it has been an important distribution center in Taipei for goods from the north and south, tea, Chinese medicinal materials, and fabrics. It is the most complete and meaningful old street in Taipei, with buildings filled with characteristics of Southern Fujian, Western-style, modernist, and Baroque architecture. Since 1996, the well-preserved Dihua Street has not only become the oldest street in Taipei but also expands into a grand Taipei New Year Goods Street every year on the eve of the Lunar New Year, becoming a major gathering place for shopping and purchasing New Year goods during the Lunar New Year period. Dihua Street is a street full of local flavors, with a dazzling array of traditional goods and a cluster of ancient and quaint buildings, like a colorful ancient scroll.
