The Hidden Gem of Italy: Procida Island

During my extended trip through Italy and Southern France, the place I was most excited to see—more than Amalfi or the lavender fields—was this hidden gem! Procida Island, a tranquil fishing village, is largely unknown to Japanese travelers and doesn’t appear in standard guidebooks. Even in peak season during July, the island remains uncrowded, offering a peaceful atmosphere. Located just 40-60 minutes from Naples by ferry or high-speed boat, Procida is easily accessible, and its attractions can be explored on foot. The ferry docks at Marina Grande on the northern side of the island. From there, you can wander through charming alleys filled with local life and occasional shops, making the walk enjoyable. Heading south, I braved the direct sunlight (with little shade to protect me) and climbed to the hilltop near the San Michele Abbey. Finally, I reached the viewpoint—and there it was! The scenery I had been dreaming of! Rows of pastel-colored houses lining the bay, softer in tone than those in Amalfi. The island’s peninsula-like shape, surrounded by the sea, reminded me of Mont Saint-Michel or Hakodate. The area was serene, with sea birds and small boats dotting the view. Even at the viewpoint, there were only 0-8 people at any given time, perhaps due to the abbey’s midday break.
