The Grand Canyon of Thailand: Sam Phan Bok

🏞 Sam Phan Bok, a natural wonder sculpted by nature, is a large rock formation located under the Mekong River. During the flood season, these rocks are eroded into numerous basins, with over 3,000 basins of various sizes (the word 'bok' means basin or deep pool). 🏜 Sam Phan Bok becomes visible during the dry season when the Mekong River recedes, typically from December to May. The sight is breathtaking, resembling a work of art. Some basins are as large as swimming pools, while others are smaller, with unique shapes such as stars, ovals, and even Mickey Mouse, showcasing their astonishing beauty. 🌄 Sam Phan Bok is thus nicknamed the 'Grand Canyon of the Mekong.' To the south of Sam Phan Bok, there are several interesting sites: 🏖 Had Song Khon: This is where two streams of the Mekong River converge, one on the Thai side and the other on the Lao side. 🏝 Had Hong: A large, fine sand dune formed by water and sediment deposition, resembling a desert, earning it the nickname 'Mini Sahara' or 'Mini Mui Ne' (Vietnam). 🏜 Had Hin Si or Lan Hin Si or Thung Hin Lueam: A wide rock plateau interspersed with sandy areas. Most rocks here have smooth, glossy surfaces in colors like yellow, gray, green, purple, orange, and blue.
