Neijiang Donglin Temple is named because it is opposite to Xilin Temple on the other side of the Tuojiang River. In the 11th year of Shaoxing in the Southern Song Dynasty (1141), a building was built in front of the Guanyin statue; it was destroyed by fire during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, and rebuilt and continued during the Kangxi and Qianlong periods of the Qing Dynasty; it was destroyed again by Japanese bombing during the Anti-Japanese War, and now only a cliff carving remains, and the temple is waiting to be rebuilt. The cliff carvings of Donglin Temple are distributed on a cliff 50 meters long and 8 meters high, with more than 20 existing stone carvings and nearly 100 statues. The most shocking of these is the male Thousand-Hand Guanyin holding a ritual implement in the 11th niche, which is rare to see elsewhere. This is the "Demon-Subduing Guanyin", a seated statue of Guanyin, 7.4 meters high and 7.16 meters wide, with a solemn and somewhat kind appearance. Under the eyes and hands of the Guanyin statue, there are 20 hands on each side, each with an eye, a total of 40 hands and 40 eyes, each with "twenty-five existences", 25·40=1000, which makes the solemn appearance of the Thousand-Hand Thousand-Eye Guanyin. Guanyin wears a crown and celestial clothes, with a statue of Shakyamuni Buddha sitting on top of the crown, looking majestic; Guanyin is adorned with a necklace, stepping on a lotus flower, and sitting on a Sumeru dragon seat. Behind the Sumeru seat are two strongmen, and in front are two flying dragons, exquisitely carved and lifelike. The Thousand-Hand Guanyin is carved from the entire cliff, with a solemn and majestic shape.
