Green Nagoya Great Buddha [Toganji Temple - Part 2]

Descending the steps from the courtyard of Toganji Temple, you'll find a small bamboo grove on the right leading to the outdoor Nagoya Great Buddha! This magnificent statue, built in 1987, stands 10 meters tall and is made of bronze painted in a striking emerald green. The Buddha's golden-colored urna (the mark between the eyebrows) shines brilliantly under sunlight, adding to its grandeur. Including its base, the total height reaches 15 meters. Nearby, there's also a bronze statue depicting Buddha's first sermon at Deer Park, where he enlightened the five monks. The monks' facial expressions are incredibly lifelike, showcasing the exceptional craftsmanship of the artists who created these sculptures. The base of the statue is inscribed with the Three Marks of Existence: "All conditioned phenomena are impermanent; all phenomena are non-self; Nirvana is peace." Despite its beauty and solemnity, this site remains relatively quiet and uncrowded. Standing before the massive green Buddha evokes a profound sense of tranquility and awe, leaving visitors deeply moved. This underrated gem is highly recommended for those seeking unique attractions. "Toganji Temple" not only boasts a rich history but is also conveniently located in the city center. To visit, take the (yellow) Higashiyama Line and get off at Motoyama Station. From there, it's just a 5-minute uphill walk.
