Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is the head shrine of about 12,000 Tenmangu Shrines and Tenjin Shrines across the country, and is counted as one of the three major Tenjin shrines in Japan. The god of learning, Sugawara no Michizane, is enshrined here, and many people visit the shrine to pray for success in exams and for the first shrine visit of the year.
