Historical and cultural background of the shrine Kamigamo Shrine was built in 678 AD and is dedicated to Kamobetsu Rai-no-Okami, who is said to be the god of thunder who protects Kyoto. The official name of the shrine is "Kamobetsu Raijinja Shrine", and it is an important center of ancient Shinto in Japan. As the clan shrine of the Kamo clan, it was listed as one of the "Twenty-two Shrines" in the Heian period and enjoys a high status. Today, Kamigamo Shrine is not only a place of faith, but also attracts countless tourists. Architectural and landscape features The architectural style of Kamigamo Shrine is very representative. The main hall (Honden) and the worship hall are both "Nagare-zukuri", which is a model of Japanese shrine architecture. After entering the building, two iconic sand piles come into view, called "Tatesuna".
