Snorkeling at Taka Makassar: A Crescent-Shaped Paradise

Taka Makassar is one of the must-visit spots included in the Komodo tour package, and for good reason. It’s a tiny island known for its crescent-shaped sandbar that only appears during low tide, giving the illusion of a floating strip of paradise right in the middle of the ocean. From above, the shape of the sandbar looks striking against the turquoise sea, which makes it one of the most photographed locations in the Komodo Islands. Snorkeling here was an unforgettable experience. The water was unbelievably clear—like swimming in a giant natural aquarium. The spot where I snorkeled didn’t have that many corals and only a handful of fish swam by, but I’ve heard that other parts of Taka Makassar are home to richer marine life. Even so, the combination of the shallow sandbar, the endless sea and the clarity of the water made it feel like I was in a dream. It was my very first time snorkeling around a sandbar like this, and the whole experience felt unique and special. What makes this place even more memorable is its untouched beauty. There are no facilities, shops or shade—it’s just pure nature. You come here to swim, snorkel and take in the view, nothing else. It’s a reminder of how raw and fragile some of these natural wonders are.
