From 1861 to 1866, the Port of Gaspé was a duty-free port, making shipping the main economic activity. About 40 to 50 European ships call each year, and many countries have opened consulates in Gaspé, including Italy, the United States, Brazil, Portugal and Norway. Railways reached Gaspé in 1911, but ambitions to become an international shipping and transportation hub ended with the growing importance of the ports of Montreal and Halifax. During World War II, about 3,000 soldiers were stationed at the naval base built on the beach, patrolling the Gulf of St. Lawrence against German submarines. In 1959, Gaspé was granted city status.
