Panyawutharam Temple

Wat Panyawutharam (Sanku), Chiang Mai is an ancient temple of Mueang Hot. Inside the temple, there is an old building and a chapel in the shape of a boat in the middle of the water. According to the history of Mueang Hot, “Phisadanakorn”, in the year 1201, Phra Mae Chao Chamadevi, the Queen Mother Sri Suriyawong, the Lord Bodin Pinthani Hariphunchai, ascended to rule the newly established city named “Hariphunchai” or Mueang Lamphun. The founder of Mueang Hariphunchai or Mueang Lamphun went to fight with the enemy in the northern border area. After the battle, he returned to the city with the bodies of the soldiers who fought with him by returning by water. At that time, it was the flood season and the current was very strong. The boat carrying the soldiers’ bodies sank (which is now the back of Wat Panyawutharam (Sanku)). He therefore ordered all soldiers to search for the bodies that had sunk in the water and to bring the bodies up to perform a ceremony according to the ancient times. Later, it was established as a temple. As for Mae Chao Chamadevi, she was ordained and observed the precepts at this temple. She also built a stupa to store the bones to dedicate merit to the soldiers who died in the war. She then returned to Hariphunchai City.
