Belem - the cultural centre of Lisbon!

Day one in Lisbon, and we're kicking off with a bang! Our first stop is the breathtaking Jerónimos Monastery, arguably Lisbon's most iconic landmark. As we look around the outside of this 16th-century masterpiece, we're surrounded by the intricate details of Manueline architecture – a unique Portuguese style that blends Gothic grandeur, Renaissance elegance, and Moorish flair. Built during Portugal's golden age of discovery, this stunning monastery is a testament to the country's rich history and maritime legacy. As we linger in the historic neighborhood of Belém, just a stone's throw from the majestic Jerónimos Monastery, we stumble upon another iconic landmark that celebrates Portugal's rich maritime heritage. Standing proudly on the banks of the Tagus River, the Monument to the Discoveries is a striking tribute to the country's seafaring legacy. Rising 52 meters tall, this imposing monument was unveiled in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Prince Henry the Navigator, the pioneering explorer who charted the course for Portugal's golden age of discovery. And in the grounds surrounding this tower, you'll spot a stunning marble mosaic, gifted by South Africa, depicting a majestic compass and a world map that charts the incredible journeys of Portuguese explorers. It's a fitting tribute to the country's enduring spirit of adventure and discovery. Imagine standing in Europe, gazing out at two of the world's most iconic landmarks... without ever having to cross the Atlantic! Sounds like a dream, right? Well, Lisbon's got a surprise for you! Looking across the Tagus River, the majestic 25th of April Bridge comes into view, and it's a dead ringer for San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge - right down to the vibrant International Orange hue that gives it a unique glow. And if that's not enough, look up towards the Almada side of the river, and you’ll notice the Sanctuary of Christ the King, a monument that has an uncanny resemblance of Rio de Janeiro's iconic Christ the Redeemer statue. It's like having a taste of America and Brazil, all in one Lisbon landmark! Who needs a transatlantic flight when you can experience these incredible structures, side by side, in the heart of Portugal? Before moving on to other parts of the city, we hung around near the picturesque banks of the River Tagus in Belém surrounded some cool, some eccentric and some thought provoking monuments. But our final treasure to uncover along the river banks is the breathtaking Belém Tower, a 16th-century masterpiece that stands guard as an entrance into the city. This stunning fortress is a testament to Portugal's glorious maritime past and its status as a mighty colonial power in early modern Europe. #belem #lisbon #cheaptravel #portugal #travel #holiday #vacation #citypassguide
