Phra Sumen Fort

Phra Sumen Fort is located in Santi Chai Prakan Park, at the end of Phra Athit Road, connecting to Phra Sumen Road. As the name suggests, it is located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. It is one of two remaining forts from the reign of King Rama I on the Phra Nakhon side. It is an octagonal fortress with a cannon port and an armory. It is a prominent feature of Phra Athit Road. Currently, it is being continuously renovated to maintain its original condition and has been registered as an important national historical site. In the past, 14 forts were built to protect the capital. However, as time passed, the forts were no longer necessary and were demolished. Phra Sumen Fort is one of two remaining forts on the Phra Nakhon side. The other fort is Mahakan Fort, which still has a gate and city wall on the northern side, opposite Wat Bowonniwet Vihara, Phra Sumen Road. It was renovated in 2011 as a city gate in the style of the reign of King Rama V, which is a gate with a spire, different from the original gate, which was made of red clay. Built in the reign of King Rama I and the brick gate above, which was used as a war tower in the reign of King Rama III, are traces of the original city wall to Mahakan Fort. The name Phra Sumen Road was derived from the name of Phra Sumen Fort. There is a public park along the Chao Phraya River with a beautiful view and a cool breeze all the time.
