The Hope and Anchor Pub

Lovely place, great food, great service, spoiled horribly by the obnoxious yobs with Beanies on and trouble written all over them on the table behind us. Not my first time at fine dining by any means. Just don't understand how characters that are like gang bangers are welcomed. Management says they like to have it as an all inclusive environment. Not wishing to entertain establishing any standards or code for those that enter. They did end up kicking them out but not only after I had had enough of their verbal attacks and took matters into my own hands which shamefully, I wished I hadn't had to do.

The Hope and Anchor has comfortable seating, was very clean, and has a pleasant decor with views over the Humber estuary but didn't live up to all the Michelin plaques it displays with such pride. The waitress was very attentive but the dining experience was seriously let down by the overly ambitious menu. Our wild garlic houmous starters were beautifully presented but ridiculously salty, the Sea Bream dish was supposed to be the 'catch of the day' yet the fish was dry, the H&A veggie burger tasted overwhelmingly of rosemary and the stem ginger within the ginger sponge desert masked any taste of the rhubarb. All in all, it was an expensive and underwhelming night out for what should have been a special celebration.

Waited 90 minutes for the food to arrive. The half lobster was the size of a small crayfish. Surely the size would have been an illegal catch. There were 2 portions of chips with it, this was possibly to make the meal look larger. Very expensive, service not up to much no-one knew which side dishes were theirs.

Complicated menu choices. Expensive for a “pub” which the owner claims it is. Chose a “sustainable” lamb dish which I was really looking forward to have only to be presented with a bowl of fat, roast mushrooms and roasted pickled onions. There was a tiny sliver of lamb which didn’t even fill a fork. £27 and an extra £4 for roast carrots. We’ve seen this pub for years when we’ve sailed the Trent and took this opportunity to visit. Not again. Serving staff were lovely but Maitre ‘D told me I should expect fat on a shoulder of lamb. I said I expected meat on a shoulder of lamb!

Before coming we read great reviews , that's why we booked as I always like to read others experiences before I spent £110 for a night and breakfast! When we arrived we were told there's is no breakfast in the morning as we are closed !we will bring you a breakfast tray tonight, oh OK we thought although we had paid for room with breakfast. We accepted this as there wasn't much we could do, so sat out on terrace had few drinks which was lovely as the sun was shining, there is a big ugly industrial building looking over the pub but looking out to the humber was nice. We had dinner booked for 5 so we went inside and was sat down with menus took a while to take out order , we ordered the roast dinners , 1 beef and 1 vegetarian we didn't wait long and the food was exceptional, my partner ordered the beef roast which comes with beef dripping roast potatoes , so as we where served the waitress didn't bring any beef dripping roast potatoes so I asked her where they were to which she said I will go and check, 10 mins later another waitress came over and asked if everything was OK, to which I mentioned the potatoes she told me she would also go and check , 15 mins or so later we had finished our dinner and no one had returned to us , then a guy who I think is the manager came to clear the plates , I told him what had happened and he apologised and came back and said we could have desert foc , but we didn't feel like desert so I refused and said thanks he then took the drink we had with dinner off our bill, which we were fine with as we didn't want it to ruin our evening. Then we thought we would have a few drinks before we retire to bed. The bar closes at what we thought was 11pm as stated on the website, Google, ***********, 7pm the manager went around turning of lights, the music went off and all the staff congregated at the bar drinking shots of sambuca, swearing, laughing and being loud we sat gobsmacked and felt so uneasy and anxious, we tried to sit through it then I went the bar and asked if they were closing ? I said if you are closing refund me and I will stay somewere else its 7pm and it says you don't shut till 11pm to which the manager rudely said no no I sent staff home I will stay and keep it open ,I ordered 2 drinks he said I couldn't pay because he had cashed up again making us feel unwelcome, we finished our drinks and went to take the dog out the back for toilet , whilst we were out the back the manager who was staying to keep the bar open sped off in his car ! When we went back in we couldn't get in the bar so we had to retire to our room and watch TV, with no water or drinks as there are no shops about and it was Sunday night, a breakfast tray was left on the bed which consisted of 2 coisants, 2 plums, museli , brown sauce and jam !!!!! We where now the only 2 in the whole building! I no longer wanted to stay but we had had about 4 /5 drinks so unable to drive so had no choice! I would avoid staying , the staff are rude , t
