Star Castle Hotel

This has to be one of the best hotels we've ever stayed in. We had a garden room with sea view & terrace, which was a lovely size with a nice big bathroom. Very comfortable. Close to the conservatory restaurant where we had been allocated to go for breakfast and for dinner on the first night. It would always have been our choice as it is so light and airy and the menu is full of delicious fish dishes. We had some completely wonderful scallops, sea bass and sea trout among other dishes. One night we ate in the castle restaurant (you can choose each day) and I had a completely fab beef wellington - a long time since I've had one as good as that. It does strike you as a bit gloomy in that restaurant after the conservatory, as all you can see out of the windows is the inside of the castle walls outside! But the service is just as good, even if it does seem a little more formal. All the food here is to die for. I told one of the waitresses in the conservatory that I was going to miss eating there each evening and she offered to photograph the menu each day and send it to me! Can you imagine the pain and anguish that would cause! I'm still missing it now some weeks later. Everything is made easy for you here. We arrived from Tresco on a local boat and they met us at the Quay and took us with our luggage up the hill to the hotel at the top. When we left they took our luggage down to the Quay and put it in the container for the Scillonian to take it to Penzance, giving us the required labels etc. All that is left for you to do is to walk back up the hill at the end of each day's sightseeing, relaxing and generally holidaying on the islands. Can't wait to go back.

We celebrated a fantastic Birthday Meal in an historic atmosphere with friends. The staff were so attentive. We had issues with the menu simply with such wonderful varied choices it was hard to choose. The quality of the food together with its processing and production was fantastic - simply the best in all of Scilly. Well done Star Castle. Many thanks. Will do an Arnie (I'll be back lol)!!!

Our 40 th Wedding anniversary was made so special by staying 4 nights in this wonderful hotel. We had asked for flowers in room, even they were amazing, with roses and freesias at v fair price. We were in a Garden suite, pristine clean and beautifully furnished. Bed v comfy. Food , Breakfast and dinner were exceptional . Well managed too. Staff all lovely. Thank you for making our stay very very special

We stayed in a garden room, and had a really great experience - none of the problems some reviewers have mentioned. Breakfasts were good, staff were brilliant - nothing was too much trouble - and the whole stay was very relaxing. Probably the most pampered I’ve ever been on a holiday.

This is a fabulous place to stay when you visit the Scilly Isles. Well appointed rooms with beautiful views. Great food and drink at reasonable prices. Motivated, customer focused staff - nothing too much trouble - in fact they are all so good that to mention anyone in particular would be incongruous. Ok - this is a short and glowing review but it is truthful so no need to say more!

Wonderful family run friendly and comfortable hotel with delicious food and great chef. This hotel has the most stunning views of the bay. Just remember there is a steep walk down to the town so wear warm clothes and sensible shoes I stayed in one of the single story “chalet” style rooms with large bed and generous bedroom. Lovely view over the gardens. Also took the opportunity to go to the heated pool to relax. I was in “Gugh”. My only criticism is that I would have liked some shelves for my unpacking but plenty of wardrobe space. Delicious selection of teas and coffee and biscuits provided on tray in the bedroom Happy to recommend and would certainly go back. Recommend all the meals!

Had a wonderful stay in a superior twin room in the main castle building, which was extremely comfortable, character-full, well-equipped and fairly large. We stayed on a dinner, b&b basis, which was relatively good value. As another reviewer has said, you are actually staying in a tudor castle and therefore it is not a very accessible building, there are cobbles and uneven floors to be navigated. It is a (steep and uneven) 5-minute walk down to the town, harbour and ferries, and less than 10-minutes in their own private transfer vehicle to the airport. The conservatory restaurant had not yet opened for the season in early April but we ate incredibly well in the main restaurant. The menu changed completely every day, had several fish dishes daily which were both superb tasting and beautifully presented, and also alternatives such as chicken, pork or rabbit for eg, and all were executed very well. We didn't think the desserts quite lived up to the savoury dishes but they were fine should you have a sweet tooth - it's a 4-course menu so we were happy to give them a miss after the first evening. There's a fairly extensive and well selected wine list. We didn't care much for the bar, which is in the dungeon (!) I'm not sure if it is always like this, but it was very damp, and damp-smelling when we were there, so not somewhere I would choose to linger. The barman, Kyle, was great though, and drinks can be brought up to the lounge on the first floor. The staff were fantastic and I believe most change every season as the hotel is closed over the winter, so this is only relevant if you are staying in 2024, and there were still more staff arriving day-by-day as we left. A big call out should go to the restaurant manager, the blonde lady whose name we forgot to ask (sorry), Molly, who was incredibly friendly and attentive, and Esme and Eloise who were also delightful. In all honesty, they were actually all great. The reception team, Sarah and Chloe, were super-helpful and friendly, as well as efficient. We were delayed departing from St Mary's for two nights owing to a massive storm, and they sorted everything out for us with no fuss. The bed itself was superb, we both had a really good night's sleep. I had two small gripes about the room - the shower was over the bath, which I understand couldn't be avoided if you were to have a bath in the room as well, however it had a shower curtain which is just horrible and could easily be replaced by a screen of some sort. The other thing was that although there was a hairdryer, it had definitely seen better days and was not very powerful. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. Great service, amazing food and incredibly atmospheric in a very special location.

Friendly staff, great breakfast and comfy bed - I stayed in a really interesting room which was an old guardhouse in built into the upper wall itself; such a fun experience and so unusual. This was a single bed room but I would really recommend it for solo travellers for the novelty! Ask for the ‘east’ or ‘west’ rooms. The location is spectacular up on a big hill with great views of the harbour and surrounding islands. I would just say be prepared to walk up a rather steep hill when walking home!

I have been to the Star Castle Hotel several times to drink in the dungeon bar it is only small. Great walks you can wander around the hotel and soak up the history and great views of the Islands from it. There is a tennis court nearby. Staff are friendly and helpful.
