Gateways Inn

My stay at Gateways Inn was overall a pleasure, with a couple of mysteries/things I would have preferred to be different. First, the positive aspects, of which there are many: - location is amazing -- a quick ~1 block walk to downtown - best bathtub EVER! I chose the Portia room, because it had a lovely bathtub with a handheld shower. I adore baths, and didn't expect to want to take a shower, so I figured it would be perfect, and it was! Really amazing tub, filled very quickly, water was very hot, etc. - generously sized, beautifully decorated and comfortable room, with two huge windows, electric operated gas fireplace, and a smallish flat screen tv. - king sized, very comfortable bed. Not super tall, not "squishy", not hard -- just right. - My room, and the Inn in general, were both very *quiet* -- I had neighbors directly next to me, but I never heard them and they never heard me (which is good, since I'm a night owl) - a generously sized breakfast is included - the room was impeccably clean - check in and out were a breeze And then, the mysteries/things I might have wished were different: - check-in and check-out were a breeze, but other than those times and the one breakfast I attended, I never saw a staff member. It felt a bit as though I was in an AirBnB; the key card enabled access to the building (which was essentially locked all weekend after the weekend guests arrived on Friday), and to my room. At one point, I postulated how I'd deal if I lost my key card, or if they became inactive (close to proximity to a magnet, or something like that). - breakfast selections were a bit limited, and further limited for me because of dietary restrictions. When it arrived, it was *extremely* salty. I had asked for no seasoning, but said "salt is okay"; I think that may have been taken not as I had intended it. - there is no "lounge" area at all. The foyer is *gorgeous* -- large, open to the 2nd floor, with a gracious stairway. Further in to the right is the breakfast room (which I'm assuming is the restaurant when it's open for the season), and straight ahead is a bar. I visited others in town over the weekend at their Inns, and saw comfortable living room spaces with couches, games, etc. Gateways has nothing like that, which probably added to the quietness. - the room had a slightly perfumed scent, which I personally don't prefer; but it wasn't overpowering Overall, I would gladly stay at Gateways again. It was very well located for the event I was attending, my room was perfect for me, and I was able to socialize with friends in other ways.

This was our third visit to The Gateway Inn this year. The historic hotel is lovely. The breakfast in the morning is outstanding. Love having a room with a fireplace. Michele makes everyone feel welcome and special. We definitely will be back again.

We love the Gateway Inn! The location is great. Walkable to everything. The rooms are so charming, quiet, and cozy. Our bed was very soft and comfortable. Staff were very friendly and helpful. And the breakfast was delicious. An amazing deal and experience all around.

My disappoin**ent with the Gateways Inn started before check-in. We had an emergency hospitalization in the family that we thought might need surgery. I emailed and called the inn to see if we could cancel and get a partial refund, hotel credit, anything. They responded a couple days later to tell me that we would be charged the full amount of the stay if we canceled. I know they are a small property and this is the policy, but when someone goes through a medical emergency, you would think you would be offered some kind of compassion. Fast forward and the surgery was postponed so we were able to make our stay, but the disappoin**ents continued. Because most of the first floor is taken up by the restaurant (which is closed in the winter so wasn't doing us any good) the place has no cozy seating or comfortable spaces for guests to relax and curl up with a book or a drink. It felt more like the lobby of an impersonal big chain hotel, which isn't what you come to the Berkshires for. Then our room was fine but nothing special - lots of chipped paint everywhere, a gross sewer smell coming from the toilet. The only highlight was the fireplace and the location close to downtown. I was already upset about the cancelation policy, but we were still hoping to enjoy a cozy inn stay. We were sadly disappointed and will stay somewhere else next time.

The pillows and bed were so comfortable. The breakfast was delicious. Staff were available and helpful. The room was clean and spacious. Location is lovely and easy to get to nearby towns. I highly recommended a stay here.

The Room was big and very spacious we celebrated our wedding Anniversary. The bathroom need a suction handle to hold on to when people are stepping into the shower.We enjoyed every moment , sorry to hear that the Restaurant is closing.

One of the comfiest mattresses I have ever slept on! The location of the Inn is great, and we were able to walk throughout the downtown area very easily. The room and bathroom were very clean and tidy. A perfect and intimate place to stay in the Berkshires.

Charming, historic property situated in a very beautiful and scenic part of the Berkshires. Very unique in all it has to offer.

We stayed at Gateways while they were hosting a large event. The hotel should never have had other guests while hosting such an event. We had dinner there the first night. It was a disaster. First it was packed and probably under staffed. We couldn’t get the waiter’s attention. After we did it took forever just to get a drink. There was a pianist who was a little loud. However, the diners had to yell to be heard over the pianist so that the restaurant was uncomfortable. My wife, who rarely complains about things like this, had to get up and leave. The food was good but it was so uncomfortable that the dinner was awful. Then there was no breakfast the next day because they were hosting a breakfast event. (Of course we got charged for the full rate anyway.) We could barely get into the front door of the inn because it was so crowded. Another big issue is that they serve breakfast from 9-10. This is ridiculous. One day we were up and about a bit before 8 so we had to go out just to get a cup of coffee. The inn itself is getting a bit long in the tooth. It needs a face lift. It needs new carpeting and overall light maintenance to make it nice. Unfortunately, there is also no nice common area. Most other inns have one or two nice rooms on the first floor to read and have a drink. Here there is just a lobby which was not too comfortable. They really need a nicer common area so that one doesn’t have to be in their room when they are on property. Not everything was that bad - which is why I gave the hotel a decent rating. The one morning that we did have breakfast at the inn - showed that it was worth it. The breakfast was excellent. I had French toast which was amazing and my wife had the avocado toast which was quite good. The portions are generous - they gave us as much fruit and juice as we could want. Simply put it was just too bad that they didn’t have this every day and didn’t have it open for a decent amount of time. The room was large. The bath and shower were nice. The bed wasn’t great. The guest room could have been nicely modernized (along with the common area) and then they would have a very good property. We will not stay there again unless we read that they have done a real make over. It’s too bad because there is some real potential and the location is very good.
