I traveled to BC at the last minute, right before Christmas, because of an unexpected death. My husband booked the hotel, flight and rental car for me. While I was on route to the destination, the hotel called and left me a message to let me know that they had cancelled my reservation. I was horrified! Now, in a strange province, to attend to the deceased's affairs, I was suddenly - a week before Christmas - left with no place to stay when I arrived! PANIC! Eventually I received another call, and later credit for my pre-paid purchase and a verbal apology for the cancelled reservation, so they could close the Inn for the Christmas holidays. This was NOT an added stress that I needed.
