Dar Roumana

Dar Roumana is one of the most beautiful places I have ever stayed and is worth every dirham! The rooms are stunning, the breakfast which is included is the best we had in Morocco, and the staff go out of their way to help you in any way they can!

For most of our extended stays in Morocco, my partner and I wanted to stay in a riad within the medina, for the ambiance and the romance. Dar Roumana fit the bill for our stay in Fes, with its restaurant highly recommended as well. Their website was easy to navigate and we put in a request for the room we wanted for the nights we would be in Fes. Dar Roumana responded quickly and while they did not have the Yasmina suite we originally wanted, they did have the Jannah suite, which was our second choice. Booking was handled over email which would normally make me nervous but I felt safe and confident, thanks to the clear communication from Redouane. Everything was concise and well described. Redouane was also able to help answer questions or direct us where to find answers when we were trying to decide our activities in and around Fes. As arranged for our transfer from the airport to the riad, a driver was waiting at the terminal with a sign with my name on it and got us to the medina gate closest to Dar Roumana, where a porter was waiting to haul our luggage and guide us to the riad. After a 10 minute walk through the labyrinth of the medina, we arrived. Behind a wooden door and a short corridor, was the breathtaking courtyard of Dar Roumana, centered on a bubbling fountain. Redouane was there to check us in and we were shown to our Yasmina suite. The room was very spacious with a sitting area on one end and open closet and bureau on the other end, sandwiching a comfortable queen bed that faced windows opening onto the central courtyard. The bathroom was located upstairs in a loft area that was also very spacious. We were okay with it because it was on a different level, but be warned that there is no door to close off the bathroom. We loved the traditional Moroccan textiles that were in the room and in the hallway. After freshening up, we headed up to the rooftop just to take a look and were given an awesome view over the Fes medina. We chose to have our Thanksgiving dinner that night at the in-house restaurant and the food was delicious. I had the sautéed prawns with smoked paprika, garlic and peas and then moved on to the seared sea bass. My partner had the cauliflower velouté and the creamy pesto gnocchi. We ended with the crème brulee and the bitter orange and almond cake. Their selection of local wines was well curated and it was nice they had half bottles available. I was able to enjoy a local rose. Breakfast was available starting at 8AM and was a lovely spread of local breads, fresh fruit, yogurt, fresh squeezed orange juice, coffee or tea, and Berber eggs one morning, sugared toast another. Service was always professional and friendly. There was never an issue with noise, as restaurant service winds down around 21:30. Our room was always spotless when we returned each day. Beyond beautiful setting for a very good meal. A nice divergence from Moroccan food, but all the ingredients are local/fresh, and there are Moroccan touches in the dishes. Service was impeccable. Great selection of Moroccan wines, which are really very good. We both had their fish dishes, which were perfectly prepared

Beautifully restored dar (practically a riad) with very attentive staff. Considering you are in the Medina, it’s surprisingly quiet at night. My only reservations, and lack of fifth star, was the food. Delicious restaurant in the dar but the menu at night was the same all 4 nights we were there and there was only one vegetarian offering. You can only eat so much gnocchi. And the breakfast was fine but compared to other data we stayed out, pretty simple and repetitive.

Delicious! This is a beautiful restaurant setting with great food. We had a large party with children and they did a great job and were very welcoming. We saw other reviews commenting on the limited menu, but its available in advance and every dish was fantastic and hard to decide between! Eddie the turtle came out and our kids loved hanging with him between courses. The Moroccan wine was delicious as were the special Fes gin & tonic. Would recommend to anyone visiting Fes looking for a fabulous meal.

Dar Roumana was just absolute perfection all around. From the minute we arrived to the minute we left, the staff were wonderful and warm. We felt well taken care of by absolutely everyone and not only was the place beautiful but the location was perfect in a quiet corner of the Medina. The food was out of this world good (we ended up eating there 3 of the 4 nights!) and the dinner atmosphere was lovely. We originally couldn’t find a booking so I emailed asking them to let us know if they had a cancellation. We were able to work it out so we stayed in one room one night and another the other two and both rooms were GORGEOUS. The one room had a huge bathroom and the other was the size of my old studio apartment! That one also had a lovely private balcony. On top of this, they organized a Medina tour, an afternoon at the hammam, and a day trip for us. We would pass on the day trip in the future because it felt like a lot and the guide was more of a driver than a guide but it was nice to see elsewhere around Fes! My only actual complaint had nothing to do with our lovely hosts and was this obnoxious group of four 30 something women who came back to their room one night drunk and yelling and laughing at 1 am. Everyone else was quiet and respectful, as you need to be in an older building! This is a great place for couples, friends and families but don’t come to party :)

My wife and I went for our honeymoon and could not have asked for a better place to stay. Beautiful rooms and dining area, amazing staff, and so close to so much. Staff went above and beyond to make sure our stay was as good as possible. The food was so delicious too. Will absolutely recommend to friends and family!

Dar Roumana is a fantastic Riad in the Fes Medina, Incredibly restored, it captures the beauty and art of upscale Moroccan living. A former leather merchant's home, the stunning decorative stucco has to be seen to be appreciated. All of it is original. With only four rooms, you essentially have the riad to yourself. Their restaurant is open to others for evening meals. All of the meals wonderfully prepared by their chef. Breakfasts are served on the Terraza, which has a view over the entire Medina. We stayed only in Riads during our month in Morocco and Roumana had the best breakfasts and dinners of any, by far. The staff at Roumana have all been there for years, some since the early 2000's. I mention that because they are a lovely group, very attentive, wonderful and helpful. All of them! They also speak excellent English. I could go on, and have, in writing to my friends. Treat yourself to a wonderful experience.

Dar Roumana provided an exquisite experience for our four days in Fes. Fes is an ancient city from the 9th century, with narrow winding streets, impassable to cars. Dar Roumana arranged for a porter to meet our taxi and to guide us to the riad (inn). I was initially concerned because the streets were deserted and unmarked, wondering what we had gotten ourselves into. However, walking into Dar Roumana was like walking into paradise. A gorgeous open air tiled courtyard with plants and a fountain. The rooms are large and beautifully furnished. We were grateful for the air conditioning, as it was quite warm in Fes in May. Beautiful shower with high quality linens and nice amenities. Note that, like all raids we stayed at, there are many steep steps to the various floors and to the rooftop terrace. It was challenging for me with hip arthritis, so be aware if you have physical constraints. Breakfast on the roof terrace is included. Delicious and very generous portions of fruit, breads and pastries, juice, coffee/tea and yogurt. The women serving breakfast were so kind and attentive. Everyone on staff made us feel so welcomed and cared for. The on-site restaurant was a welcome change from the same traditional Moroccan cuisine at other cities we had visited in our two week stay in the country. The continental menu provided a choice of several courses and dishes, all of which were quite delicious. Best of all, we could finally get a cocktail and glass of wine—difficult to obtain at many restaurants based on traditional Muslim abstinence from alcohol. The waiters were professional, courteous and skilled. We fell in love with them. Redouane at the concierge desk is outstanding. His English is excellent. He arranged for everything to make our visit unforgettable. He provided a guide for us in the market, which made the visit so much more relaxing. The market/souk is a bewildering labyrinth. (Khlafa, our guide, also spoke excellent English and was very knowledgeable about the history of the city as he showed us important sites. ). Then, Redouane arranged for a driver to take us on a day trip of the mountain area to visit a Swiss-like resort town and natural park with monkeys. The driver shared the history and culture of the area. Redouane also recommended and arranged dinner at another restaurant in Fes so we could have a different dining experience. At each point, he closely listened to what we were interested in doing and magically made it happen. On our last day, we had to leave before breakfast to take a train to Marrakech. Dar Roumana packed us a breakfast and lunch to take with us, since there is very limited food service on the train. Our stay at Dar Roumana fully exceed expectations. Highly recommended.
