We had booked a room with a balcony, which we did indeed get (room 119), but it faced towards the hill at the back of the hotel so no views whatsoever. We asked could we change to a south-facing room with better views and they did have another room available, same type as the one we had booked, but south-facing. However, this was in their view an upgrade – that was OK with us too, we don't mind paying a little extra for something better – but they wanted an additional 90 Euros for the one night. I know we could just have said no thank you, Switzerland is not cheap, and it was our own choice to upgrade, but we still felt it was a bit over the top. The new room (115) was nice. It was quite large and modern, and the balcony was actually a very big terrace. Quality-wise the room was quite as it should be. We ordered a table in the restaurant and asked for a table at the window. When we got to the restaurant, the waitress gave us a window table – but one minute later the head waiter asked us to move because that table was reserved for somebody else and the waitress had made a mistake, and there were no other available window tables – all were reserved by others. OK, that can happen – but it was a little annoying to have to move. We then asked for the cheese fondue that we had seen on the menu earlier but they did not serve that in the evening allegedly due to the smell. So, with a less than perfect table and the meal we wanted not on the menu we decided to say no thanks and left the restaurant – and found a really nice traditional restaurant in the town that served cheese fondue (which was really good). When we checked out the next day, they said they had a small present for us – small indeed, they gave us a box of matches with the hotel logo on it!! A box of matches! We didn't quite know what to say, we nearly laughed out loud. To us this hoteI was an odd experience. It's hard to put a finger on it exactly. The atmosphere was just a bit odd – not exactly unfriendly, but not really friendly either. The atmosphere was kind of severe – professional perhaps, but no friendly banter among any of the staff, and their smiles just didn't seem quite genuine. If we ever come back to Adelboden we will definitely look for another place to stay.
