Only an hour's drive from Tokyo, it has convenient transportation and is a must-go station on the way to Hakone. A Three-Day Family Trip to Hakone Hakone in August felt like a gift from nature. We embarked on this relaxing trip from Tokyo. On the first day, we took the Odakyu Romancecar direct from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto. The scenery along the way gradually transitioned from the city to lush greenery, delighting the children. Upon arrival, we took a mountain bus to Moto-Hakone Port and visited Hakone Shrine. The crimson torii gates against the backdrop of Lake Ashi created a picturesque scene. In the afternoon, we cruised the lake on a pirate sightseeing boat, where the children played pirates and gazed upon Mount Fuji in the distance (despite the foggy weather). Dinner was served at Rakuten Stay near Lake Ashi, where we enjoyed lakeside Western cuisine. Dad was delighted by the wagyu beef pizza. Departing from Rakuten Stay on the second day, we first visited Ōwakudani to watch the steam rising from the volcano and sampled the famous black tamagoyaki (black tamagoyaki), which the children thought looked like magical eggs. Then, we visited the Open-Air Museum, where they could climb and interact with the outdoor sculptures, a perfect blend of art and play. We stayed at Hakone Mizuono in the afternoon, enjoying a relaxing hot spring bath. In the evening, we enjoyed a delicious kaiseki meal featuring seafood and wagyu beef that the whole family enjoyed. On the third day, we departed from Hakone Mizuono for Odawara Castle. The children were thrilled to try out shuriken throwing in ninja costumes. We had a seafood donburi for lunch. In the afternoon, we visited Kamakura High School Station to experience the "Slam Dunk" scene and strolled along Shichirigahama Beach collecting shells. In the evening, we enjoyed a soba set meal in Kamakura. By the time we returned to Ikebukuro, night had fallen. This trip to Hakone was a perfect blend of nature, history, and family fun. The children learned a lot, and Dad had a satisfying foodie craving. The Hakone Kamakura Amazing Pass is highly recommended for convenient transportation. This time, I took a leisurely solo trip aboard the Hakone Tozan Railway, so I'd like to share the places I visited! The fastest ride on the Odakyu Romancecar from Odakyu Shinjuku Station to Odawara Station takes about 75 minutes. The fastest ride from JR Tokaido Line Yokohama Station takes about 46 minutes. Odawara is easily accessible from central Tokyo, and is a great place to enjoy a leisurely balance of nature and sightseeing. It's only 15 minutes from Odawara to Hakone-Yumoto Station on the Hakone Tozan Line! Alternatively, from Hakone-Yumoto to Gora, you can transfer to the Hakone Tozan Line and enjoy the approximately 40-minute ride up the mountain road, with several switchbacks along the way, making for an extraordinary experience. The Hakone Tozan Railway offers several discount tickets, but this time I used the "Hakone Tozan Railway One-Day Relaxing Ticket" to get the best deal. This ticket allows unlimited travel between Odawara Station, Hakone-Yumoto Station, and Gora Station throughout the day, so I was able to freely explore all the places introduced here♪ It was great that I could easily get off at any stop along the way and easily visit the shops I wanted to visit✨ [Odawara Castle] 🏯 6-1 Jounai, Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture 🚶 Approximately a 10-minute walk from Odawara Station 🕔 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM (last entrance 4:30 PM), closed the second Wednesday of December and December 31st - January 1st 🎫 Castle Tower: Adults ¥510 / Elementary and Junior High School Students ¥200. From the second floor, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Hakone mountains. It was a wonderful restaurant where you could easily lose track of time. Established in 1891, it's the oldest bakery in Hakone. Dine-in is also available, and the Hot Spring Stew Bread is served piping hot. The plum and anpan (bean bun) was delicious, with its exquisite combination of saltiness and sweet bean paste. [Manjuya Nanohana] 📍 705-705 Yumoto, Hakone-machi, Ashigarashimo-gun, Kanagawa Prefecture 250-0311 🚶 1-minute walk from Hakone-Yumoto Station 🕘 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM 👆 The chewy "Hakone no Otsukisama" and "Gokuro-san" sweets can be steamed and enjoyed on the spot. They also come in boxed sets for souvenirs, and their bite-sized treats make them perfect for snacking on and on. My personal recommendations are the crispy pie-like "Baked Mont Blanc" and "Baked Apple" baked goods. They're fragrant and have a wonderful texture, making them sure to make a wonderful souvenir. The "Hanaboro" sweets I chose as a souvenir were also delicious, with a hint of chocolate. [Iseya Main Store] 📍 3-6-22 Honmachi, Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture 250-0012 🚶 Approximately 15 minutes walk from Odawara Station 🕘 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM (Closed Thursdays) 🌟 There's also a store at Lasca Odawara, directly connected to Odawara Station, which is open daily and accepts credit cards. 👆 Founded in 1935, this long-established Japanese confectionery shop in Odawara offers a wide selection of sweets, from the classic, mildly sweet Mame Daifuku (bean daifuku) and Yasuamakara (sweet bean daifuku) to treats made with Odawara's famous plums and citrus fruits, as well as seasonal treats. Currently offering sweetfish and doyo mochi (doyo mochi). A local recommended a delicious kamameshi restaurant to me, so I'd like to share it with you! This is Torigin, a kamameshi chicken restaurant with four locations in Odawara City. Established over 50 years ago, it specializes in kamameshi and chicken. The location I visited was the Shimosoga branch. Odawara is easily accessible from Tokyo, about 1 hour and 20 minutes by Romancecar. ✨ There's also a Torigin restaurant in front of Odawara Station, located right outside the east exit, so if you're coming by train, head there. Kamameshi is cooked individually from raw rice after you order, so it takes about 30 minutes from the time you order. It's best to order just the kamameshi first. I ordered the Gomoku Kamameshi, recommended by a local. During lunch, they also offer a yakitori set, which was a great deal! 😊 The dish was packed with ingredients, and it was truly like a treasure chest! ✨💎 It was delicious! 😋✨ I visited on a weekday, but I arrived shortly after opening time, and by the time I left around noon, there were already several groups waiting in line. The Hakone Gora Onsen Daimonjiyaki Festival is scheduled to celebrate its 104th anniversary this year, making it a historic and beloved event among local residents and locals alike. The Sakawa River Fireworks Festival is my favorite, and I attend it every year, with approximately 10,000 fireworks launched into the sky. I have a feeling more Koreans will come soon, haha. I was so tired the day before that I overslept;;; the line was insanely long. So I got cut off and came back the next day lolololol. Everyone coming out after eating was Japanese + foreigners, and they were raving about how amazing it was in English ; lots of praise haha. I finally got to eat it on the last day, whew~~ It’s super thick and feels like a whole ox tongue is in the curry. So the price is a bit on the higher side. The moment I sliced it and ate it, it melted in my mouth! I ate it with admiration. Since the curry contains 36 kinds of spices and herbs, the curry aroma was a bit lighter? and the ingredient scents were stronger. For those sensitive to spices, I’d recommend the veal cream curry. The veal cream curry is also a popular dish, haha. I wanted to try it, but I was alone and it was too filling to eat it all~ If I go to Tokyo again, I plan to try the veal cream curry. I sat by the seaside for about 20 minutes, eating while watching the sea and people, organizing my thoughts and thinking about what to do next. I came to Tokyo without a set itinerary, haha. But I didn’t want to rush to Shibuya just to buy a birthday gift. (This Tokyo trip was for my birthday on 2024.12.9) 😆 I searched on Google and found a huge Gundam nearby, haha. I walked to #DiverCityTokyoPlaza to see the Unicorn Gundam. It’s a plaza selling all kinds of things, so there was a lot to see, and there were restaurants too~ The Gundam I saw in Yokohama City in 2022 was the best, but seeing the Unicorn Gundam was also somehow overwhelming? This trip was from March 19th to March 26th. It actually snowed in Tokyo on the 19th. At that time, I felt like a complete cherry blossom refugee 😭 There were basically only early cherry blossoms in the city of Tokyo, and they had not yet bloomed on a large scale. Fortunately, I found that the cherry blossoms in Minamiashigara Prefecture, Kanagawa near Tokyo are in full bloom! 📍Position: Spring Wood Trail and Lucky Path Get off at Fuji Film-mae Station and walk for three minutes to get there. I went to Kamakura the day before and stayed in Fujisawa, which is about an hour away from here. If you start from Tokyo, it might take two hours. Most of the people who come here to check in are Japanese, and many elders come here to enjoy the flowers. It is a niche and super photogenic place. It is highly recommended for cherry blossom refugees who are about to return to their country and will not be able to catch the blooming cherry blossoms in the city! It is currently in full bloom and I feel like it will be no problem to last until the end of the month. Whether you depart from Kamakura or Tokyo, most of the outbound trips will pass through Odawara Station. 1. I have been to Kamakura several times. It is not a place for youthful memories. There are Chinese tourists everywhere, and they are very annoying. They don't queue and they talk loudly. 2. Odawara is very close to Kamakura, but the water is very clean. Maybe it's because there are stones instead of sand here, and there are no branches brought by the sea. 3. After exiting the station, turn right and walk a little bit, and you will see the foot bath on the 14th floor. You can enjoy the sea view while soaking your feet. It is very comfortable. But it was not very hot on the day I went there. I prefer it to be hotter. After the foot bath, I had fried pork cutlet and fried oyster set meal downstairs. It was very delicious. 4. The scenery is better if you enter Odawara Castle from the south gate. You need a ticket to go up to the main tower, but the lower floors are free. I didn't go up because my feet hurt. I always think there is nothing to see in the main tower, but this one has a viewing platform outside, facing the sea. 5. There is more than one "door to the sea." It is mainly a passage that can be closed to prevent tsunamis. When you walk out of it, you will suddenly see the sea. The sea here is bluer than Kamakura or Atami.
