A two day trip from Xiamen, organised by Stephen, an English speaking Tulou guesthouse owner. This is the itinerary he made for us and picture 5 is his family home. Hakka Tulou village is a very nice place to take a closer look at special Tulou round earth buildings. After the park car will drop you, by left side of the road behind the public toilet there is a patch to the viewing point from where you can see the entire village just need to climb a little bit for it and then can go down to the village to see it from inside. The park ticket will cost you 65元、 but it will also allow you to go inside of the main building, which well renovated and open for visitors. It can be a nice place to take some photos and also know better the way how buildings are designed inside, since this one is for tourists only and nobody leave there. Otherwise at others buildings you can see people who really is leaving there. It also a nice part of the trip to watch the local people way of leaving and also try their local herbal tea with them. At some buildings you also can find available rooms to stay for some nights to enjoy the peaceful time and escape for your crowded city life routines. There is also a river which is going through the village and which bring refreshing air.

The place give a chance to have a little camping experience, but at the same time with hotel comfort. The tent has a standard hotel bathroom and a small balcony from which you can see the river and the entrance to Yongding. Especially at evening time guests can see a part of the light show. The river’s sound can disturb some sensitive during night people, but give joy to others to listen it. BBQ grill also available to rent here for self cooking, which also can be nice camping experience.

It’s all about community in the Fujian tulou; these rural dwellings are an incredible traditional feature of Fujian province, where both round and square earthen structures seemingly rise from the ground. Built between the 12th and 20th centuries, they’re usually large and enclosed buildings with only one or two entrances, and can house up to 800 people! The following is the story shared by the Hakka people in Anding~ The Chuxi Tulou Cluster is dominated by Jiqing Tower. As the largest building, Jiqing was once home to more than 70 households and was built 600 years ago. It was originally built by seven brothers from the same family over a period of 20 years. The walls are 2 meters thick, and the thickness decreases by 3-5 inches with each upper layer. The earthen buildings built in this way are warm in winter and cool in summer. Now, except for Jiqing Building, all other buildings are occupied by villagers. There are many stable overseas Chinese in Singapore. Many of the deeply rooted Fujian overseas Chinese will give back to their hometown after making money. The house numbers at the entrance of the village and the stone with the word "粗" (coarse) were all built with large amounts of private investment from overseas Chinese. At present, Anding is mainly managed by the Xu family, who are responsible for the renovation of the council, and Jiqing Tower is also being renovated by a private council. "Xu Family Rules" are also carved on the stone at the entrance of the village. I heard that some time ago the whole village invited more than a hundred family members and friends of the Xu family to a buffet, which was very lively. The word "Chu" has the same pronunciation as "Chu", so it was changed to Chuxi Tulou because it was too complicated. Compared with Yunshui Creek and Tulouwang, this place is more primitive and quieter. Thanks to the inconvenient transportation here, it is not so commercialized. Believe it or not, I’ve never heard of Xiamen before this trip. Thanks to Xiamen Air for having me to stopover at Xiamen for 17hrs, now I know little about Xiamen. To be honest, at first I would underestimate this city, but after taking not so short walk through Zhongsan Pedestrian Street, Yanwu Bridge, and around Xiamen University, all I can say is Beautiful! Love the ambience of this city and also the people, even sometimes we lost in translation haha, but they are so kind and helpful. Wish I can go back to this city for exploring more.
