Hiking the high trail of Tiger Leaping Gorge has been rated as one of the 'top ten classic hiking trails in the world'. Then this article is for you—a relaxed one-day hiking guide to Tiger Leaping Gorge. Without further ado, let's look at the route (map at the end). This route is more suitable for self-driving: 1. Leave Lijiang by car in the morning and head to 'Meet Halfway' at Tiger Leaping Gorge. The drive takes about 2 hours and parking is free, but the mountain roads are quite narrow, and you may need to reverse into the parking lot at the entrance. 2. After parking, you can walk back a bit along the high line to take photos and check in. There's no need to go too far; there are two bends that are particularly photogenic. 3. After checking in, return to the parking spot and continue walking down towards the halfway direction to take more photos. 4. Coming out from halfway, continue walking forward to check in at the small waterfall. 5. This is basically the end of the check-in spots. Head back to the car pick-up point and go to Teacher Zhang's. 6. Arrive at Teacher Zhang's Inn and take Teacher Zhang's trail down to the middle of Tiger Leaping Gorge to check in! 7. The return trip uphill is a bit challenging. If you feel energetic, you can return the same way. If you're not afraid of heights, you can climb the 168 steps of the Brave Man's Ladder for a more fun experience! Tips: Although this route doesn't involve much hiking, the schedule is quite tight. Time arrangement: It is recommended to depart at 8:30 am, have lunch at halfway around noon, and return to Lijiang before evening. Equipment recommendations: Sun protection!!! Focus on sun protection, followed by looking good. Wear whatever looks best because the route is not very challenging. Just consider sun protection, including a hat, sunglasses, a windbreaker, an outdoor backpack, and trekking poles.

The peaks range from 3,000 to 5,596 meters above sea level, and the canyon walls are steep, with almost 90-degree slopes within 200 meters above the water level. There are three sections: Upper, Middle, and Lower Tiger Leaping Gorge. The Upper gorge is famous for the "Tiger Leaping Stone," the Middle gorge for its narrow "One Line Sky," and the Lower gorge for its scenic beauty of "High Gorge Emerging into a Calm Lake." This was my first time in Yunnan. Due to limited time, I wanted to visit some unique attractions, so I chose to hike the Tiger Leaping Gorge. Initially, I was a bit confused looking at the guide, but after sorting it out, I realized it wasn't that complicated. This route is: Tea Horse Guesthouse → Halfway → Dragon Cave Waterfall → Teacher Zhang's Guesthouse → Contemplation Stone → 168 Brave Men's Cloud Ladder ⛰️The starting point of the Tiger Leaping Gorge hike is a guesthouse called Naxi Yage. If you start from here, you have to climb the mountain, passing through the Twenty-Eight Bends of the Tea Horse Ancient Road to reach the Tea Horse Guesthouse. This section requires more physical strength due to the climb. If you're not confident in your physical fitness, you can skip this part and take a taxi directly to the Tea Horse Guesthouse. The second section is from the Tea Horse Guesthouse to Halfway. This section is very easy, estimated to take about two hours. It's basically walking on a flat mountain ridge. Just pay attention to safety on narrow sections. Personally, I think this section has the best scenery. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is right in front of you, and every shot is a masterpiece. The third section is from Halfway to Dragon Cave Waterfall. This section is also not difficult, estimated to take about an hour. Be aware that the road near the Dragon Cave Waterfall becomes very narrow, so be careful. The waterfall cascading down from Haba Snow Mountain is breathtaking. The fourth section is from Dragon Cave Waterfall down to Teacher Zhang's Guesthouse, estimated to take about an hour and a half. This section requires some skill as it's all dirt road and initially descends along the edge of a cliff. If you're scared, you can sit down and inch your way down. The rest of the section is not difficult. The fifth section is from Teacher Zhang's Guesthouse down to the Contemplation Stone by the Jinsha River. There's a 15 CNY passage fee here. Once you reach the Jinsha River, you'll see the popular Contemplation Stone. However, it's essentially monopolized, and taking photos there costs 98 CNY per person. Whether you take photos or not is up to you. From here, you can actually walk further to challenge the Sky Ladder and see the One-Line Sky. But due to limited time, we chose to return to Teacher Zhang's Guesthouse and take the more thrilling 168 Brave Men's Cloud Ladder. It's a vertical wooden ladder, very exciting, divided into three sections with resting spots in between. Overall, it's not difficult and worth the challenge. There's a 10 CNY fee per person at the top. After returning to Teacher Zhang's Guesthouse, you can wait for the bus back to Lijiang. 🚗Transportation: From Lijiang to Tiger Leaping Gorge, you can only take a taxi or a bus. The bus only goes to the entrance of the Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge Scenic Area, which is still some distance from the hiking starting point. So, I recommend taking a taxi or carpooling. I carpooled from Lijiang to the Tea Horse Guesthouse for 100 CNY per person using a ride-hailing app. From Teacher Zhang's Guesthouse back to Lijiang, the bus costs 55 CNY per person and departs at 3 pm and 4 pm. For other times, you can ask the guesthouse to help arrange a carpool for 80 CNY per person. 🏠Accommodation: If you want to stay overnight at Tiger Leaping Gorge, I recommend staying in a guesthouse near Halfway. The guesthouses here are well-established with complete facilities and great views, such as the "Shuang Si Ni Balcony" and "World's Best Toilet" at Halfway. If you want to experience them, you can stay for a night and start your hike the next morning. 🍭Equipment: Hiking jacket, sun protection clothing, hiking boots, trekking poles. The weather in the mountains is unpredictable. The temperature was 4°C on the day of our hike, and it was very windy, so I brought a hiking jacket. I don't recommend bringing one if the weather is hot. Perhaps due to the high altitude, although it was 4°C, it felt hot later on, so I also brought a light sun protection jacket. Hiking boots can provide grip in some areas, and trekking poles are a must if you're hiking the 28 Bends. Trekking poles also make the return from Contemplation Stone to Teacher Zhang's Guesthouse much easier. There are many supply points along the Tiger Leaping Gorge hike, and the prices are reasonable, so you don't need to carry a lot of supplies. Those who exercise regularly can easily complete the challenge with light packs.

On our way to Lijiang and Shangri-La by car, we hiked a short section of Zhonghutiao: Photos of Teacher Zhang's Inn Life. • Navigate from Lijiang to [Teacher Zhang's Inn in Tiger Leaping Gorge, Shangri-La]. • We also went to Xiahutiao, which is the Tiger Leaping Gorge scenic area. April is the dry season, so there is nothing to see in the scenic area and we have to queue. After visiting the scenic area for an hour, we went to [Teacher Zhang's Inn]. If you want to go directly to Teacher Zhang's Inn, you will meet staff on the way who will ask you where you are going. You must say you are going to Baishuitai and you can go directly! ! If you are going to Tiger Leaping Gorge, you will be asked to turn left and go uphill to queue. • Start hiking from Teacher Zhang’s Inn. The Zhonghutiao section is maintained by several villages, so a maintenance fee of 15 yuan per person will be charged at the entrance. • The way there is downhill, the slope is a bit steep, and there is a lot of gravel, so it is recommended to wear non-slip shoes. The road is very beautiful, and you can take more photos of the Grand Canyon from various angles. • It takes about 30 minutes to go down the mountain and arrive at the [Daze Stone] life photo check-in point. You must first buy a ticket for taking photos, then queue up and wait for your number to be called. It costs 98 yuan per person to take 4 photos, and the average photo time is 2 minutes per person. Then you need to scan the QR code with your mobile phone to download the photos, and you need to pay 2 yuan. The staff will help you pose. There are some big rocks nearby where you can take nice photos, or you can find other camera positions by yourself. • On the way back, you will reach the branch point of the ladder. You can choose to continue climbing up the slope to Teacher Zhang’s Inn, or you can take the 168-level Brave Ladder [charged 10 yuan per person]. • The cloud ladder is very exciting. Climbing up the almost vertical cloud ladder is very exciting. Friends who are not afraid of heights can try it! The ladder is divided into three sections. Don't look down when climbing, hold on to the railings and climb! • We chose to return to Teacher Zhang’s Inn by the same route, which took about 50 minutes. My friend and I were the type who lacked exercise, and our calves hurt for three days after the climb. The entire mountain road is covered with mud and rocks. Tiger Leaping Gorge is located in Tiger Leaping Gorge Town, Diqing Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province. Since ancient times, Tiger Leaping Gorge High Road has been the main transportation route of the Ancient Tea-Horse Road. The Tiger Leaping Gorge was famous at home and abroad for three visits by American anthropologist Locke in the 1930s. Only some real hiking enthusiasts go to the Tiger Leaping Gorge High Road. I walked it once more than ten years ago. At that time, the whole journey was primitive mountain roads without cement. There were no other accommodation and supply points except HAF WAY midway inn. The starting point was not the current Naxi Ya Ge but Lengdu Village in Tiger Leaping Gorge. Later, due to the development of infrastructure, the original hiking line was diverted and had to cross an extra mountain and was abandoned. The current starting point, Naxi Ya Ge, is now a high road hiking route with a total length of about 19 kilometers. Although it is simpler than the original route, it also brings together the essence of the Tiger Leaping Gorge hiking route. Tiger Leaping Gorge Meet Mid-mountain Bed and Breakfast
