It’s an amazing experience walking along the Wisdom Path. It’s a very beautiful masterpiece with the heart Sutra calligraphy transformed into an outdoor large-scale wood carving on a natural slope at the foot of Lantau Peak near Ngong Ping of Lantau Island. There are thirty-eight timber columns with inscription of the Heart Sutra and arranged to correspond to the topography of the landscape, and in a figure-of-eight configuration symbolising infinity. The column located at the highest point of the hill is left blank to suggest the concept of "emptiness" (Sunyata), a key theme in the Heart Sutra.

The Wisdom Path is about 20 minutes away on foot. There are 38 wooden columns or beams, each of which is inscribed with Chinese calligraphy. The Chinese characters are the words from the Heart Sutra (般若波羅蜜多心經) written by master sinologist and calligraphy Professor Jao Tsung-I. The Heart Sutra’s Sanskrit title is Prajñāpāramitāhṛdaya, which can be translated as “The Heart of the Perfection of Wisdom”.

The Wisdom Path is located at the foot of Lantau Peak, the tallest mountain in Hong Kong. It’s a great hiking path with tranquil scenery along the way. At the end, you will see the wooden pillars engraved with Heart Sutra in Chinese characters, and also the magnificent Taiyu mountain view. I enjoyed the short walk here, highly recommended if you visit the Giant Buddha and Po Lin Monastery. Just follow the direction, it’s easy to find. I went in autumn; the weather was perfect and not too hot. If you visit in summer, please remember to bring a hat, umbrella, and sunglasses.
