Ku Kut, the origin of Hariphunchai architecture
#Winter attractions
- Wat Chamdevi, formerly known as Wat Ku Kut, is located on Chamdevi Road, Village 5, Nai Mueang Subdistrict, Mueang District, Lamphun Province. There is an important ancient site, Phra Suwanna Jangkot Chedi, which is believed to enshrine the remains of Queen Chamadevi.
- This Hariphunchai-style castle-shaped chedi used to have a spire, so it is also called a castle-shaped spire. It has a unique appearance, different from castle-shaped chedis in Lanna and Khmer art, namely, starting from the square base, the chedi chamber is also square, stacked and decreasing in size in 5 steps. Each level has chedis in all four directions, and on each of the four sides of each level, there are Buddha images enshrined in niches, and the broken spire is probably a square cone.
- Another Hariphunchai-style castle-shaped chedi has an octagonal shape, so it is popularly called an octagonal chedi [6]. It is a small chedi. All eight sides of this chedi chamber enshrine standing Buddha images in niches. Above the chedi chamber is a layered roof that gradually decreases in size in the shape of a bell. Above is the broken-off spire. This type of stupa is also widely found in the central region, such as Wat Phra Kaew in Chai Nat Province, Wat Phra Rup in Suphan Buri Province, and has continued until the beginning of the Ayutthaya period.
