【Hanoi】Must-visit national treasure-level attraction 🇻🇳Thanglong Water Puppet Theatre
If romance is the soul of art, then Vietnam's water puppet show is a perfect combination of romance and creativity. This performance, known as the "National Treasure of Vietnam", is not only a treasure of local culture, but also an eye-opening visual and spiritual feast.
Reminder: The performance lasts about 50 minutes. The venue is an old-style stage and building, so the chairs are not very comfortable to sit on. Considering that the performance is nearly an hour long, if there are audiences of all ages and children, you can bring cushions to support your butt or back!
Reminder: There are 4 sessions a day in summer and 6 sessions a day in winter. Please refer to the official website for actual performance times and showtimes. No matter which show you attend, buy your tickets in advance! We went there on a weekday evening and were shocked by the packed house 😱
This art originated from field entertainment during the flooding of the Red River thousands of years ago. Farmers put puppets into the water to play with them, and later it gradually evolved into a performance form of performing on tents. Puppets are controlled by bamboo poles and ropes, and with the help of lights and fireworks, they show rural life, historical stories and myths and legends, such as a shepherd boy playing the flute, plowing the fields and planting rice, and dragon and lion dances.
Reminder: Don’t worry about language barriers, the puppet’s movements can tell the story vividly. In modern times, even Andersen's fairy tales and international classics have been added to make the content more diverse.
The performances are mostly presented through actions, voices, and pictures. Even if you don’t understand Vietnamese, you can still immerse yourself in the plot of the performance!
Reminder🔔Sitting in the front row may cause you to be splashed with water💦..Consider whether you want to experience the performance with your five senses😂
You can choose your seat (area) first when buying tickets
The ticket prices for different areas are also different, just like watching a concert!
Today, from Hanoi’s Thang Long Theatre to Ho Chi Minh City’s Golden Dragon Water Puppet Theatre, this performance has become a must-see cultural experience in Vietnam. The most admirable are the heroes behind the scenes who, with half of their bodies submerged in water for hours, can make the puppets come alive and bring joy and touch the audience. If you want to experience the cultural soul of Vietnam firsthand, water puppetry should definitely be your first stop!
