Due to a fire, only 124 Buddha statues built during the Heian period were rescued. After 15 years of careful carving by sculptors, 876 statues were rebuilt. - The Buddha statues are made of cypress wood and lacquered gold. There are a thousand Buddhas and a thousand faces, reflecting the Buddhist doctrine of "all laws are born from the mind". - Tips - Visitors take off their shoes and enter the hall. One of my favourite cultural stops was sanjusangendo temple. The vast hall houses over 1,000 statues of the Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Bodhisattva, recognized as Japanese national treasures. There and hundreds of it the size of normal human decorated neatly in a tiny hall. One of those scenes which you cant find anywhere around the planet. At the middle stands a big big statue.
