Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this town was once a summer retreat for royalty and nobility. Because we were going back and forth on the same day, we only chose three places to visit: Palácio da Pena, Sintra Town, and Quinta da Regaleira. One of the most famous attractions in Sintra is the Pena Palace, a castle famous for its colorful display. The palace's red, yellow and blue walls are bright and eye-catching, and its architectural style combines exotic elements with medieval and romantic elements, making it full of fantasy. Standing high on the Pena Palace, especially after the mist, the entire mountainous area is shrouded in mist, adding a bit of mystery. Villa Regaleira is one of the most mysterious attractions in Sintra. It combines Gothic, Renaissance, Moorish and Manueline architectural styles, making people feel like they are in an ancient fantasy world. One of the most famous attractions is the Inverted Tower (Initiation Well), which is also the filming location of the movie "The Sheep Man's Labyrinth". This shaft is like a tower extending toward the center of the earth, divided into nine levels, symbolizing the nine levels of hell described by Dante in the "Divine Comedy", giving people the feeling of a mysterious spiritual journey. There are many winding paths, underground tunnels, fantasy gardens and mysterious caves hidden throughout the manor, each of which is cleverly designed and inviting to explore. #timetotravel We visited in the late afternoon and managed to catch the golden hour, it was so magical!! 🌅 We took the train from Lisbon to Sintra and called an uber to drive up to the National Palace of Peña, from what I recalled, ubers in Portugal were not very expensive. There is an entrance fee of around $120 HKD but it was so worth it to visit. The red and yellow exterior of the palace is stunning 😍 and this makes the palace unique from other palaces I have seen!! The National Palace of Peña is situated at the top of the peak, therefore it offers a panoramic view of Sintra which is a plus!! #sintra #portugal #境外遊

We arrived at the Park/garden at 9:20AM on Sunday (the gardens open at 9AM) There was already a line of people buying tickets and a line of people entering the park. Although the line to get into the park was very quick, since security just needed to scan our tickets. 📍Do yourself a favor buy your tickets online, you don't need to choose a date when you are just visiting the park and outer terraces. 📍No need to buy a shuttle bus ticket, the line is longer than the walk up itself. It's a pretty easy up hill walk, that takes about 10-15 minutes. 📍It's a bit tricky to buy tickets for the garden & outer terraces online. But It is worth your money and there is no wait to walk around the outer terraces! 📍I would highly recommend coming to the gardens when they open at 9AM before the line of people starts. When we were leaving the castle terraces, the line was super long around 10:15AM After visiting the castle terraces, we walked around the garden. There are some nice viewpoints like Elizabeth's hights. We went to the farm area, but we didn't see any animals which was disappointing. If you follow these tips you will also have a nice trip like we did.

It is about 50 minutes from Lisbon by train so you can easily make a day trip to Sintra while you're in Lisbon. We visited Pena Palace, a fairytale palace built in 19th century, and Quinta da Regaleira, a neo-gothic mansion with the iconic initiation well. We had lunch in Sintra town centre and thereafter travelled to Cabo da Roca - the westernmost point of mainland Europe. It may be cheaper to go from one location to another by Uber or other ride hiring platforms instead of hiring tour guides touting outside Sintra train station. Located on top of a hill, there are great views and you can see the ocean from here. Although the views are great, you’ll probably visit because of the beautiful colors and amazing architecture. It’s very popular so it’s recommended you get tickets online in advance. You can either reach it by licensed tuk-tuk or on foot, which is a nice walk through the woods.

The history of this magical place begins in the 12th century with the construction of a small chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Pena. In the same place, Manuel I ordered the construction of a monastery, the Royal Monastery of Our Lady of Pena, which was later handed over to the Catholic organization the Order of St. Jerome. In the 18th century, lightning strikes destroyed parts of the tower, chapel and sacristy, and then the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 reduced the monastery to near ruins. Only the high altar area within the church, with its marble and alabaster altarpiece by Nicolas de Chantraine, remains intact. In the 19th century, the Sintra mountain landscape and the ruins of the ancient monastery amazed King Fernando II of Portugal, and he fell in love with Sintra. In 1838 he also acquired the ruined old monastery, the Moorish castle, the surrounding farms and all the forests with his personal property. The original project was to restore the building as a summer residence for the royal family, but his enthusiasm led him to decide to build it into a palace under the guidance of German geologist, mineralogist and architect Baron Wilhelm Ludwig. The building is surrounded by other structures that are connected by walkways, watchtowers, a pathway, and even a suspension bridge. The palace blends architectural references of Manueline and Moorish influences, producing a surprising "Thousand and One Nights" scene Driven by his interest in collecting, Ferdinand II planted native forest species from all continents, including Asian camellias, which turned the 85 hectares of Pena Park into the most important botanical garden in Portugal. Palacio da Pena is recognized as one of the top ten most beautiful castles in the world. In 1995, it was selected as a World Heritage Site as part of the Sintra Cultural Landscape. It is now frequently used for the state affairs of the Portuguese President and other government officials. In the Middle Ages, it was only a church of the Virgin. In 1493, the Joao II couple came here for pilgrimage, and the successor Manuel I built the monastery. In 1755, the monastery was razed to the ground during the Lisbon earthquake. In 1842-1854, the summer palace was vigorously built. The architect was Baron von Eschwege, the German, who was finally completed in 1885. The palace is both Gothic, Renaissance, Moorish and Manuel.

If you were going to Porto but it's a bit too far for you, this is a must-see!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Sintra is about 40 minutes away from Lisbon🇵🇹♫❤︎ You can get there from Orient Station or Rossio Station. But!! ! ! ! ! ! I recommend starting from Rossio Station. If you buy a ticket (bus + train, I think) from Rossio Station for 14 euros, it also becomes a one-day pass for certain buses in Sintra. (Make sure you keep the receipt. You may be asked when you get on the bus.)
