The Little Hagia Sophia was built in the 6th century and is one of the surviving beautiful Byzantine buildings in Istanbul, near the Sea of Marmara and the ruins of the Grand Palace of Constantinople. There are few tourists here and the surrounding environment is very quiet. This was originally the Byzantine Church of St. Sergius and St. Bacchus, built by Emperor Justinian and his wife Queen Theodora between AD 527 and 536, prior to Hagia Sophia. The exterior of the church is exquisite, with an unusual dome and irregular octagonal base. Like the Hagia Sophia, the interior of this church was originally decorated with golden mosaics, while the columns were made of red and green marble.
