Jiujiang, a seriously underrated riverside city, is full of surprises.
Not a trendy city, but with a thousand years of riverside history.
No skyscrapers, but full of poetry along the Yangtze River.
——Welcome to my hometown, Jiujiang!
🕖8:00 am Carb Lover's Breakfast Feast
The bustling Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street comes alive with the sizzling of woks! Golden, crispy youtiao (fried dough sticks) are chewy and stringy, radish cakes are satisfyingly spicy, and a bowl of pork lard wontons awakens the Jiujiang native in you. (All this for just ¥5!)
🌊9:30 am Step into a Yangtze River Ink Painting
Strolling to the riverside, suddenly awakened by the horn of a cargo ship! Journey through the Water Margin murals along Xunyang Tower, watch Suojiang Tower guard the surging waves, and as you cross the Yangtze River Bridge spanning Jiangxi and Hubei, your headphones play "Pipa Xing" – the very Pipa Pavilion where the Jiangzhou Sima shed tears is right beneath your feet!
📿2:00 pm Delve into the Folds of Time
Find antique treasures from the old men at the Cultural Palace gate, strike playful poses at the Dazhong Road graffiti wall, and capture vintage movie vibes against the red brick walls of the British Concession! Duck into a Republican-era bookstore for a cup of gaiwan coffee, and watch the trams clang past the arcade from the second-floor terrace.
💦4:30 pm Become an Immortal at the Lake Heart Pavilion
Rushing into Yanshui Pavilion, you'll discover how much the ancients enjoyed life! The two rows of plane trees along Ligong Causeway divide Gantang Lake into an emerald ribbon. Hop on a sculling boat for ¥15 and watch the sunset paint the Nine-Bend Bridge with golden threads. (Wear a Hanfu! You'll thank me later.)
🌙7:00 pm Night Market Rendezvous
Dive into the Xunyang Tower barbecue food stalls! Glutinous rice wrapped in youtiao is incredibly sticky, grilled tofu skin sizzles, skewers of beef are ¥10 a bunch, and you can even enjoy hot pot and barbecue together? Sip on a Lushan Cloud Mist tea beer, surrounded by the Jiujiang dialect and the sounds of finger-guessing – this is the happy planet of riverside heroes!
Tips:
▪️All attractions are free! Explore on foot + shared e-bikes.
▪️Ligong Causeway is best visited at dusk, the shimmering water is breathtaking.
▪️For youtiao, look for the "Four Sisters" stall; they close in the afternoon!
A slow-paced city where poetry blends into breakfast.
Next time you pass by the Yangtze River, remember to stop for a day. 🌉
