This is our first visit to Bamberg. We went there mainly old town, a UNESCO Heritage site and Altes Rathaus (Bamberg Old Town Hall). Bamberg is being also nicknamed the "franconian Rome", because it lies on 7 hill. The town itself is best explored on foot. We are pleased to see small houses placed along a river bank and enhanced by reflections in river’s water. We made a fabulous walk there with many more magnificent observations. The Alte Hofhaltung that translates to the ‘Old Court’ is a historic attraction in the beautiful city of Bamberg. The Alte Hofhaltung area comprises of former houses and farm buildings that belong to the Episcopal palace from the 15th century. By the building is a vast courtyard with a late Gothic arcaded frame. The court is also home to a historical museum and half timbered building with spectacular rooftops. The courtyard with its beautiful hanging baskets of flowers was a sight to behold! The architecture is very interesting as well. You can't go inside but it's worth a look see! Standing there will definitely make you feel going back in time. The sculpture “Meeting“ by the Chinese artist Wang Shugang (chinesisch 王书刚), depicts eight lifesize squatting men, positioned in a circle on Schönleinsplatz Square near a busy crossroads in Hainberg park. There is a beautiful garden with another statue. The work of art is made of bronze, varnished in red and goes back to an exhibition in the year 2013, CIRCLES, when it was first shown in Bamberg. Thanks to private donations and private funding, the eight red painted bronze casts are now permanently in the city since year 2016. Relax the environment pleasantly. One of the most important sights of Bamberg is the historic town hall. According to legend the bishop of Bamberg did not grant the citizens any land for the construction of a town hall. This prompted the townsfolk to ram stakes into the river Regnitz to create an artificial island between the two districts, on which the Bamberg Town Hall (Altes Rathaus )was erected. We went to this old town hall in different timing - evening and morning. The pictures really look good in both timings. The most beautiful view of the town hall is from the Geyerswörthsteg south of the town hall. The former fishermen's district in Bamberg's Island City is endearingly known as Little Venice (Klein Venedig). This district is characterised by half-timbered buildings that prop each other up and by tiny, pretty gardens. Pretty houses by the river in Bamberg. Very nice ambience, it is best to walk upstream on the right so you have a very nice illumination of the houses that are directly on the water and remind a little of Venice. The monastery is situated at the peak of the hill exhibiting a magnificent view of the city of Bamberg. The city is built over seven hills each with a church at its peak. The St. Michael's Monastery holds the highest altitude in comparison with the other peaks. We went today but the church has been closed for several years due to the restoration. Good thing it has a very beautiful, well maintained garden. It takes a good hike to come here but once you are on the top, you have a breathe taking view of Bamberg with the cathedral and residence shining in the background. We ate breakfast here today as it had a lot of choices delicious cakes, pastries and savouries. Really pleasant, polite and helpful staff. The selection of cakes and savouries was pretty good, all at low prices. They also have tables outside on the Green market . The cafe is located at Franz-Ludwig-Str. 5C, 96047 Bamberg. Cozy Italian restaurant serving pizza, pasta & traditional mains in a warm, brick-lined space. Nice change from traditional German food! My husband ordered seafood pasta and I choose a big plate of antipasti. Both dishes were freshly prepared, nicely presented and delicious. Wonderful experience all around. Highly recommend! #WinterTravel Neue Residence and State Gallery Neue Residence is a Baroque palace in Bamberg, built in 1613 and expanded with two wings in 1697-1703. It has more than 40 beautifully decorated rooms. The highlight of the palace is the Emperor's Room, with beautiful paintings on the ceiling and walls. While we were walking around, the guide explained the history of the palace and showed us the rooms, including the Bishop's Bedroom.
