Venice is not romance, but the way light flows on water.

I joined a group tour to Venice and recorded the interplay of light and shadow I encountered on the water. Visiting Venice was part of my group tour itinerary. Time was limited, and I couldn't wander too far, but fortunately, the city itself is not large, and many beautiful scenes are hidden along the way. I took this set of photos during breaks in the itinerary and while waiting for boats at the pier. I didn't think too much when taking them, but now, looking back, I find them surprisingly appealing. 🌊 A serene St. Mark's Square in the morning, devoid of people and pigeons We arrived at St. Mark's Square very early, before the sun had fully risen, with a pale pinkish-blue hue filling the sky. The statues and buildings were still in shadow, with only a few lampposts illuminated by the faint light. The square was very quiet at this hour, completely different from the crowded version during the day. I captured the pillar with the statue of St. Theodore, standing silently against the backdrop of soft mist and the gradually brightening morning light, as if guarding the sleeping water city. 🚤 Venice on the canals is a city in motion Many people say that Venice is a city on water. But I think it's more like a "floating" city. The streets here are water, public transportation is by boat, and gondolas are parked in front of doors instead of cars. Looking out from the pier, rows of wooden piles lined the waterway, gondolas moored alongside, and in the distance, the white dome of the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute. The sunlight slanted down, making the entire church look like a phantom rising from the mist. I took several shots from different angles. The church remained unchanged, but the light and angles gave it different expressions. 🏛️ The moment the red flag fluttered, it felt like time folded I took the photo of the red flag fluttering in the wind at the vaporetto (water bus) stop. Directly opposite was the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute. The moment the red flag suddenly rose, there was a sense of ceremony of the "Republic." The flag bears the lion symbol of Venice, the golden pattern prominent in the sunlight. That moment made me realize that although Venice appears gentle and romantic, it was once a powerful maritime republic, with undeniable strength and glory. 🎨 I particularly like the one taken through the railing gap I took this photo by an inconspicuous corridor. I crouched down, placed the lens through the gap between the pillars, and saw the distant San Giorgio Maggiore island and its bell tower. A seagull happened to fly across the frame, and the water surface shimmered with soft light, as if in a tranquil painting. This is Venice; you inadvertently step into a perfectly composed moment. ⛵ Life on the Grand Canal follows a different rhythm I've always believed that the character of a city can be seen from its "means of transportation." Paris is the subway, Amsterdam is bicycles, and Venice is boats. Traffic on the Grand Canal is busy but not noisy. Speedboats, gondolas, and water taxis shuttle across the water, but you don't hear the roar of engines, only the gentle lapping of waves against the buildings. I stood on the bridge and captured a few passing boats, gliding through the green canal and across the scene in my eyes. 🕊️ The romance of Venice, I think, is not about love, but about light Many people find Venice romantic, but that romance doesn't come from couples or stories, but from the humidity in the air and the color of the light. In the evening, the distant buildings began to be tinged with gold, and the water surface gradually turned pink. I captured a silhouette of a knight's statue holding a sword high, with a dazzling halo of sunlight behind it. There was no movie-like romance, but plenty of real small lights and shadows, small colors, and small moments. Although it was a group tour, I still managed to capture my Venice within the limited time. This is a city where you don't need to deliberately search for photo spots. As long as you stop, it will present you with a picture.
