🚆 My Favourite Route — Newcastle to Edinburgh by Train | Coastal Views You’ll Never Forget

#myfavoriteroute If I had to recommend just one train journey in the UK, it would be the Newcastle to Edinburgh route — hands down my favourite. Whether you’re a tourist or someone who’s lived in the UK for a while, this stretch feels like a hidden gem you’ll fall in love with every time. 🌊 Why This Route? The Newcastle to Edinburgh section of the LNER East Coast Main Line offers some of the most stunning, uninterrupted coastal views in the UK. Imagine wide open sea, dramatic cliffs, and postcard-perfect beaches rushing past your window — it honestly feels like you’re on the Spirited Away “train by the sea.” The best part? You don’t need to drive for hours or hike a cliffside trail — just sit back and enjoy the view. 🗺️ Scenic Highlights Once the train leaves Newcastle, the magic begins: ✔️ Alnmouth Station — From here onwards, you enter the famous “coastal stretch.” ✔️ Berwick-upon-Tweed — One of my favourite moments: the train crosses the iconic Royal Border Bridge, offering incredible views of the River Tweed meeting the North Sea. ✔️ Scottish Borders — As you enter Scotland, the sea stays close by, with beautiful rugged cliffs and quaint coastal towns. ✔️ Forth Bridge (closer to Edinburgh) — Another engineering marvel with panoramic water views. This route easily rivals scenic train journeys in other countries, and I personally think it’s one of the most underrated travel experiences in the UK. 💺 Practical Seat Tip • Travelling Northbound (Newcastle → Edinburgh): Book a seat on the right-hand side for uninterrupted sea views. • Travelling Southbound (Edinburgh → Newcastle or London): Sit on the left-hand side to enjoy the same scenery. When booking your ticket on the LNER website or apps like Trainline, look for the “Direction of Travel” icon on the seat map — that helps you pick the correct side easily. 🎒 Why I Recommend It I’ve done this route multiple times, and every time it feels new — the light changes, the sea sparkles differently, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot seals or dolphins along the coast. It’s a peaceful, visually rewarding alternative to flying, with no airport stress. Plus, Edinburgh Waverley Station drops you right in the heart of the city — no long transfers required. ✔️ Final Tips • Book early to snag a window seat. • Trains run frequently, but mid-morning or afternoon often offers the best light for photos. • Don’t forget your camera or phone — you’ll want to capture this. • Pair the journey with a few days exploring Edinburgh, or continue onwards for even more of Scotland. In short: If you only do one UK train ride for the views — make it Newcastle to Edinburgh on the right side of the train. You won’t regret! #travel #train #unitedkingdom
