Meiji Shrine: A tranquil sanctuary in the heart of bustling Tokyo

Amid the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, in the lively Harajuku area, lies Meiji Shrine—a peaceful haven surrounded by lush greenery. As you step inside, you'll find serenity, fresh air, and a quiet atmosphere where visitors come to pray, stroll, and relax. Today, we’d like to introduce an alternative entrance for those who might have some extra time after visiting Gotokuji Temple and wish to stop by Meiji Shrine for a prayer. Start by taking the Odakyu Line from Gotokuji Station to Sangubashi Station. Exit from the East Exit, cross the street, and you’ll find the entrance to the shrine. As you walk in, you’ll pass a park (we’re not sure of its name), but you’ll spot the NTT Docomo Yoyogi building—it’s stunning, so don’t forget to snap a few photos. This route is less crowded and quieter. Follow the path, and you’ll arrive at the shrine. You’ll enter from the side of the shrine, and before praying, there’s a spot on the left to wash your hands. Inside, the shrine is beautiful and serene. One of our favorite things here is the omikuji (fortune slips), which are incredibly uplifting and perfect for those seeking encouragement. Another recommendation is the wooden bell charm, a lucky talisman that isn’t commonly available. If you’re interested, ask the staff for assistance. After visiting the shrine, you can head out through the main exit towards Harajuku for shopping or dining. On the way out, you’ll be greeted by stunning autumn foliage, perfect for leisurely walks and photo opportunities. Eventually, you’ll reach the train station, where you can easily access Takeshita Street or Omotesando for more exploration.
