An indispensable place for those who want to understand Japanese history

This really is a must-see museum in Tokyo and is part of the Ueno Park Museum complex. The Tokyo National Museum was a thoroughly enjoyable and informative surprise. As it is recommended to book tickets in advance; I spent about 4 hours here as I stopped to read almost everything. Basically, the museum takes you from Japan’s earliest recorded period of settlement and art (the Jomon period) all the way to Edo, and walks you through the stylistic changes that occurred over thousands of years and how these changes were tied to politics, culture, and economics. Some of the highlights are the history of calligraphy, the history of sword making (such as the many different parts of a sword and how they differ in style and technique from one master sword maker to another), textiles, and kimonos.
