TAKAYAMA, a city of Edo period charm

Takayama City is located in Gifu Prefecture. It is a popular tourist destination with old Japanese houses remaining. Many people use this city as a starting point for traveling to Shirakawa-go, but who would have thought that this city is actually worth visiting and is just as beautiful? If you have half a day before traveling anywhere else, I would recommend stopping by here. Let's start with 1. San-machi-dori Street, or "Three Town Street", an old town area with Edo period houses lining both sides. Then go for a leisurely stroll. 2. Miyagawa Market along the Miyagawa River In the morning, don't forget to try some Japanese apples, sweet and crunchy, authentic from Japan. In addition, from the market area, there are stairs that we can walk down to see the river. In the river, there are Kamo birds, which are in the same family as ducks, and there are also carp swimming naturally. I can tell you that the atmosphere is shady and the scenery is very beautiful. 3. Hida Kokubunji Temple, the symbol of Takayama, is a Buddhist temple that is like the symbol of Takayama City. This three-story pagoda was built in 1820. Inside the main hall, there is a Buddha statue built in the Heian period for worship. Inside the temple grounds, there is a large ginkgo tree that is said to be 1,250 years old, which is a must-see. 4. Visit Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine and Yatai Exhibition Center in Takayama. This is a famous shrine that is used as the venue for the Takayama Matsuri Festival in autumn. Next to the shrine, there is the Takayama Matsuri Yatai Kaikan, which displays four actual yatai floats used in the festival. If you are interested in seeing the Matsuri Festival, visit during the Spring Festival around April 14-15 and the Autumn Festival around October 9-10. Getting to Takayama 1. Narita Airport, Tokyo Take the JR or Shinkansen You have to change trains at least 3 times. Travel time is about 7 hours. 2. Haneda Airport, Tokyo Take private trains, Shinkansen, JR express trains. You have to change trains at least 2 times. Travel time is about 6 hours. 3. Chubu International Airport, Aichi The closest to Takayama. Take private trains or buses. It will take about 4 hours.
