Wat Mahathat and Ayutthaya Night Market, Ayutthaya, Thailand

Wat Mahathat is famous for its "Head of Buddha in the Tree", where the Buddha's head is wrapped in tree roots. It is one of the seven wonders of Thailand. You have to see it with your own eyes when you come here. Standing in the center of the ancient Thai capital of Ayutthaya, Wat Mahathat is believed by ancient scholars to be the administrative and religious center of the Sukhothai Dynasty (1238-1438 AD). It was built in 1374 during the reign of King Indradeep of Ayutthaya, Thailand. A total of 198 pagodas were built, of which the main pagoda collapsed during the reign of King Songtham. Only the supporting stone pillars remain in the hall. It was listed as a World Cultural Heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 1991. Initially, the architecture of Wat Mahathat was influenced by Khmer. The top of the main pagoda was oval. It was built in the early dynasty to enshrine Buddha relics. Later, it was gradually changed to Sukhothai style, and the top of the pagoda became more and more pointed as it went up. This is a must-visit place to understand the history of Southeast Asia. After visiting, you can go to the night market opposite to find food. Like the night markets in Taiwan, Dacheng Night Market gathers a lot of Thai food and snacks.
