Winter in Shirakawa-go

Shirakawa-go is a is a quaint little village in the Gifu Prefecture that looks like a scene straight out of a fairy tale! This UNESCO World Heritage site is well-known for gassho-zukuri, which are houses built with triangular thatched roofs resembling hands clasped in prayer. It is constructed at a steep angle to allow heavy snow to fall off easily in winter. During winter, there is a light up event where several houses will be lit up in the evening. With the houses covered in a thick blanket of snow, this evening illumination scene is nothing short of magical.
