Shanghai Tunnel Science Museum – Underground Wonders Unveiled

Tucked beneath the surface of the city, the Shanghai Tunnel Science Museum turned out to be way more fascinating than I expected. It’s not a huge space, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for with some seriously cool exhibits and interactive displays that bring the world of tunneling and underground engineering to life. One of my favorite parts was stepping into a replica tunnel boring machine—it’s surprisingly massive when you’re right next to it. There’s also a ride-like experience that simulates being inside a tunneling project, complete with rumbling sounds and flashing lights. It made me appreciate how much work goes into building the subways and infrastructure we take for granted every day. The museum also does a great job blending technical knowledge with hands-on learning. I got to try a few simulations, like balancing pressure while tunneling under a river—harder than it looks! It’s very kid-friendly but also genuinely interesting for adults if you enjoy engineering, design, or just want to see something different from the usual museum lineup. It’s not the kind of place that gets a ton of buzz, but if you’re into hidden gems or want to see a side of Shanghai that’s usually beneath the surface—literally—this spot is worth the detour. #shanghaionbudget
