After work, I always longed to escape the monotony of daily life. On a whim one Friday, I decided to take a high-speed train to Shanghai for the weekend. After browsing accommodations for half an hour, I was drawn to the retro photos of this youth hostel, brimming with old Shanghai charm, and immediately booked a night. Pushing open the hostel door, I was greeted by a faint aroma of tea. A few girls sat chatting softly on the sofa, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. At check-in, the friendly receptionist recommended nearby breakfast spots and photogenic alleys. My bunk was by the window, and with the curtain drawn, it became my own little haven. The attention to detail was impressive. Returning in the evening, I found the bathroom spotlessly cleaned by the housekeeping staff—even the mirrors were free of water stains. The biggest surprise was the ambiance of the common area. Everyone kept their voices low—some curled up in corners with books, others played soft melodies on the piano. Before leaving the next day, I even got to try some local qingtuan (green rice cakes) shared by fellow guests. For less than 100 RMB per person, staying in such a cozy spot in the city center was a steal.
