Today, it is the Waldorf Astoria Shanghai, consisting of two buildings. The old building was the former Shanghai Club, and the new building was completed in 2010. Long history and unique style The hotel has a rich history, from the original Shanghai Club Building, through the International Seamen's Club, Dongfeng Hotel, and finally to the current Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund. It was built in 1864 and has a British classical style exterior. The wall decorations and tower style have typical Baroque features, showing a unique architectural charm. The interior was designed by Japanese architect Kikutaro Shimoda and is famous for its 34-meter-long black and white marble bar counter. Architectural Features and Interior Landscape The three doorways on the ground floor of the building and the two round windows above perfectly set off the hanging flower carvings on the keystone in the middle, making the main entrance appear particularly grand and luxurious. There is a pair of Tuscan columns at each auxiliary entrance on both sides, adding to the solemnity of the building. The Ionic column is one of the three column styles in classical architecture. It originated in Ionia in the middle of the 6th century BC. It is characterized by a slender column body and a downward-curled spiral on the capital, symbolizing "feminine beauty". Buildings such as the Asia Building, the old Sassoon Building, and the Mercantile Bank Building on the Bund also use Ionic columns. The entrance of the hotel is a uniquely shaped arched door and a wide white marble staircase, which exudes elegance. 💗Other tips: The hotel is free to enter and take photos, which is very suitable for friends who are interested in historical buildings and culture.
